OUTREACH & PROGRAMMING
Educational Programs are offered to enhance basic knowledge
about the effects of alcohol and drugs, associated risk factors,
prevention, treatment, and harm reduction. Some of these
programs include: Alcohol & Drug Policy Workshops, University
101 Presentations, and presentations to Residence Halls and
Student Organizations. Student training to facilitate the
workshops and presentations are offered in PSYC 399/489 classes and as a part of G.A.M.M.A. membership. The
presentations are facilitated by peer educators trained by
Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Programs .
In compliance with the University Policy and Guidelines
regarding the use of Alcohol by USC students, representatives
from each student organization planning to sponsor an event on
campus where beer or wine will be served must attend an Alcohol
Policy Workshop. An Executive Officer, a Student Member, and the
appropriate USC Faculty/Staff Advisor of the organization must
attend the workshop before approval may be granted to host an
event on campus where beer or wine will be served. All workshops
are facilitated by USC's Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Programs . Check
www.sa.sc.edu/adp
for a list of Alcohol Policy Workshop dates, times, and
locations.

Operation EMPRESS (Environmental Management
Program for Reaching and Educating Students about Substances)
is an initiative involving social marketing and
prevention campaigns to raise awareness regarding issues
pertaining to the use of alcohol, other drugs and associated
high-risk behaviors.
Social marketing is the practice of applying
commercial marketing strategies to influence the voluntary
behavior of target audiences in order to improve their personal
welfare and that of the community. This office will use focus
group and survey information to promote messages that impact
student thinking about alcohol and other drugs use.
Prevention campaigns are energetic and
informative activities designed to raise awareness about
high-risk behaviors that negatively impact USC students. This
office will implement national prevention campaigns that
correspond to the mission of actively promoting low-risk,
healthy choices about the use of alcohol, other drugs, and
associated behaviors. Campaigns sponsored by the Office of
Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Programs include:
National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week

October. The campaign highlights students making smart decisions
to protect their health and safety.

enjoying their Spring Break. In 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001,
2002, and 2004 USC's Safe Spring Break Week event received the
first place award and second place in 2003 from the national
BACCHUS organization, recognizing the impact and overall
excellence of this student focused program. Our most popular
event is the Safe Spring Break Carnival. At this event, we
