USC’sWest Quad and
University Housing staff
take honors at AIA awards banquet
Gene Luna and Michael Koman of the University of South Carolina
were honored Friday, March 10 with the Alliance Award from the
South Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
The Alliance Award honors one or more individuals or a group
that doesn’t practice architecture, but whose work influences
architecture and design and benefits the architecture
profession.
The award was presented to Luna, associate vice president for
student development and university housing, and Koman,
environmental program manager, at the AIA South Carolina’s
annual design awards banquet in Columbia. Luna and Koman led
University Housing’s effort to plan and build USC’s first
“green” building, the West Quad Residence Hall and Learning
Center.
The Boudreaux Group, one of the firms that designed West Quad,
nominated University Housing for the award to honor the
accomplishments of Luna and Koman.
“The Boudreaux Group nominated University Housing for this
award,” said Boudreaux principal architect Heather Mitchell, “to
recognize the visionary leadership of Gene Luna and Michael
Koman, and the impact they have had on sustainable design
initiatives, green architecture and ultimately, quality of life
in our community, state and beyond.”
In remarks accepting the award, Luna recognized the partnership
required to achieve the success of the West Quad project.
“The University of South Carolina has a responsibility as the
flagship University in South Carolina to lead by example,” said
Luna. “And West Quad, with the great partnership of USC staff,
Columbia architects and a local builder, Contract Construction,
is an example of how such leadership can impact the state.”
At the AIA banquet, West Quad also received the President’s
Award from Brick SouthEast, a brick industry association. The
President’s Award is the highest honor among the Brick Awards,
given every two years to recognize exemplary design achievements
for projects that use clay brick as a predominant building
material. Charlie Jeffcoat, university architect, accepted the
President’s Award on behalf of USC and the West Quad project
team.
