Second CGC Global Chat Focused on "Understanding
Other Cultures" Oct. 16
Anthropology professor Dr. Kimberly
Simmons will be the featured speaker at the Carolina Global
Community (CGC) Chat at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.16 in South Quad. Dr.
Simmons will discuss the importance of symbols and communication in
cross-cultural contexts.
Dr. Simmons’ research interests include identity formation and
the cultural construction of race and gender, as well as
international immigration and women’s organizations. She has
conducted research in the Dominican Republic focusing on gender
identity and racial identity formation.
The chat is open to all members of the University community and
will be followed by a question and answer period and refreshments.

First CGC Global Chat Sept. 5
The first Carolina Global Community (CGC) Chat of the semester will
be at 7 p.m.Wednesday, Sept. 5 in South Quad. University of South
Carolina art professor Dr. David Voros will speak on issues related
to international themes in the context of art.
Dr. Voros teaches studio art courses, specializing in painting, and
his work addresses personal history and experience in the context of
western mythology, as well as the history of painting and
contemporary popular culture. Voros will be discussing these topics
among others, including a study abroad trip he led to Italy this
summer.
CGC is a learning community designed for students interested in
enhancing their intercultural experiences by living, learning, and
working with international students. The community also emphasizes
educating students, faculty and staff on international subject
matters.
The chat is open to all members of the University community and will
