USC’s ‘Garnet & Black’ student magazine named Pacemaker finalist

Columbia -- The University of South Carolina’s student magazine, “Garnet & Black,” is a finalist in the annual Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker competition.  Nine other finalists are competing for the national honor.

Since 1927, the ACP's Pacemaker award has been considered by many to be student journalism's highest honor.  Magazines are judged by professional non-ACP staff persons that are highly knowledgeable in magazine production and design. Winners of the Pacemaker awards will be announced in October at the 85th Annual National College Media Convention held in St. Louis, Mo.

“Garnet & Black” will be competing with magazines published during the 2004-05 academic year.  Journalism major Mary Pinckney Waters served as editor.

“I am extremely pleased the ‘Garnet & Black’ student magazine was recognized as one of the top ten collegiate publications”, said Jerry Brewer, associate vice president for student affairs. “The G & B editors have worked very hard the past few years compiling and displaying the many talents of Carolina students”.

The “Garnet & Black” magazine was formed in 1994 as a consolidation of the University's former yearbook and literary magazine. This student magazine focuses on issues of general interest to the Carolina community and includes a “Create” section the features student literary and other creative work. The magazine is distributed free to numerous locations in the Carolina community.  Student magazine staff work in all aspects of magazine production and promotion including writing, editing, photography, advertising, marketing, layout, design, production and distribution.

The Associated College Press is a division of the National Scholastic Press Association. Established in 1933, it is the largest and oldest national membership organization for college student media in the United States. Associated Collegiate Press annually recognizes college newspapers, magazines and online publications for excellence in news reporting, photography, publication design, advertising design and editorial cartoon.
