Pruitt among 78 administrators nationwide chosen

to develop accountability system

Dr. Dennis Pruitt, vice president for student affairs and vice provost for academic support, is among 78 administrators from public colleges and universities across the nation selected to develop recommendations for a Voluntary System of Accountability.

The project is a partnership between the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC).

Pruitt will work with task forces and technical work groups to develop a system of accountability that can be adopted at any public college or university.  He will serve on the Task Force on Campus Engagement.

 

Deborah Beck, student health services, Michelle Burcin, healthy carolina, and Gene Luna, student development and university housing, presented “National Healthy Campus Clearinghouse & Resource Center” and “Healthy Carolina: A Holistic & Integrated Approach to Healthy Campus 2010” at the Southern College Health Association (SCHA) conference in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

 

Dan Berman and Jennifer Latino, university 101, Erin Campbell, Mandie Thacker and Misty Lawrence graduate assistants, co-presented “First-Year Seminar Instructor Training Two- Day Workshop” at the Annual Conference on the First Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

Dan Berman, university 101, presented at the FYE Conference in Dallas, Texas.

 

Fay Coleman and Rachel Edington, graduate assistants and master’s candidates in higher education and student affairs, won the Best Communication Award for their case study at the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW) in Tallahassee, Fla.

 

*Chrissy Coley, Julie Holliday, Angela Street and Katie Lynch, student success center, co-presented “Promoting Student Success at The University of South Carolina” at the Annual Conference on the First Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

Tim Coley, university housing, presented “Leading with Character” at the South Carolina Organization of Residence Educators (SCORE) conference in Charleston, S.C.

 

Viki Sox Fecas, career center, co-authored the textbook “Thriving in College and Beyond,” Kendall-Hunt Publishers, Dubuque, Iowa.

 

Jimmie Gahagan and Tyler Page, university housing, presented “The Sophomore Initiative: The University of South Carolina’s Innovative Approach to Empowering Sophomore Students” at the joint conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) in Orlando, Fla.  Gahagan also presented “Enhancing First-Year Student Success Through Residential Learning Initiatives” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

Bob Godfrey, financial aid and scholarships, was awarded the NASFAA (National Association of Financial Aid Administrators) State and Regional Leadership Award for the Southern Region.

 

Vicki Hamby, career center, was elected to Leadership South Carolina Class of 2007.

 

*Jean M. Henscheid, national resource center for the first-year experience and students in transition, presented “The Myths and Magic of Learning Communities” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

Scott King, undergraduate admissions, was chosen to chair-elect of NAFSA (Association of International Educator-Region VII formerly known as National Association of Foreign Student Advisers).

 

Pete Liggett, student health services, presented “Behavioral Intervention Programming for Disruptive, Disturbing, or Dysregulated Students” at the Southern College Health Association (SCHA) conference in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

 

*Jennifer Latino and Dan Berman, university 101, co-presented “University 101 Teachers Speak Out: The Course From Instructors’ Perspectives” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

*Jennifer Latino, university 101, Mandie Thacker, Erin Campbell and Misty Lawrence, graduate assistants, co-presented University 101 Peer Leaders Speak Out: The Course From the Peer Leaders’ Perspectives” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

George Micalone, carolina productions, presented “Late Night Programming: Friend or Foe?” at the National Association for Campus Activities national convention in Nashville, Tenn.  He also presented “Stop, Breathe, Stretch” and “Late Night Programming: Friend or Foe?” at the National Association for Campus Activities South Regional Conference in Birmingham, Ala. 

 

Laura Page, parents programs, and Justin Brady, graduate assistant and master’s candidate in higher education and student affairs, presented “Partnering with Parents for Student Success” at the joint conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) in Orlando, Fla.

 

Karen Pettus, student disability services, presented “Community College Students: Coming of Age While Living at Home” at the joint conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) in Orlando, Fla.

*Mary Stuart Hunter, national resource center for the first-year experience and students in transition, presented “Primer for First Time Attendees” and “Starting a Statewide Conversation” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

*Betsy O. Barefoot National Resource Center for the First Year experience and Students in Transition presented “Best Practice in the First College Year: Defining What Works and Why” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

*Tracey Skipper, national resource center for the first-year experience and students in transition, presented “Using Student Development Theory to Improve Educational Practice in the First College Year and Beyond” and “Publishing on the College Experience” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

Barbara Tobolowsky, national resource center for the first-year experience and students in transition, presented “Sophomore-Year Initiatives: An Institutional Overview and Institutional Examples” at the joint conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) in Orlando, Fla.  Tobolowsky also presented “The ABCs of Conducting Research on the First Year of College” and “Publishing on the College Experience” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

*Barbara Tobolowsky, national resource center for the first-year experience and students in transition, presented at the European FYE conference in Goteborg, Sweden.

 

*Mary Stuart Hunter and Betsy O. Barefoot, national resource center for the first-year experience and students in transition, co-presented “Spirituality and Higher Education: Sustaining Authenticity, Wholeness, and Self-Renewal” at the Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in Addison, Texas.

 

Justin Brady was named the 2006 Outstanding Intern at the National Orientation Directors Association Conference (NODAC) in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Justin won the honor for his summer position as Family Orientation Intern at Suffolk University, Boston, Mass.  At NODAC, he also won Best Problem Solving in the Graduate Student Case Study Competition.
 

Erin Campbell, graduate student, won Best Communication and Best Overall in the Graduate Student Case Study Competition at the National Orientation Directors Association Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
 

Katie Harrison, student financial aid and scholarships, presented “At Least It’s Not a Financial Aid Transcript (The Effective Use of NSLDS)” at the joint conference of the North and South Carolina Associations of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Asheville, N.C.
 

Viki Fecas, career center, presented “Teaching Transfers – Lessons Learned” at the National Conference on Students in Transition, St. Louis, Mo.
 

Jean Gasparato, student financial aid and scholarships, presented “ACG and SMART Grants: A Roadmap to Planning, Awarding, and Monitoring” at the joint conference of the North and South Carolina Associations of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Asheville, N.C.
 

Deborah Lewis, student financial aid and scholarships, presented “SAP: Going Beyond Measurement to Forge Effective Campus Partnerships that Enhance Student Academic Success” at the joint conference of the North and South Carolina Associations of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Asheville, N.C.
 

Scott Lewis, student judicial programs, co-presented “Student Suicide: Best Practices for Student Affairs Administrators, Counselors and Campus Health Service Providers,” a web seminar sponsored by the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM). Lewis also presented at the SCCPA (South Carolina College Personnel Association) conference in Charleston, SC.

 

Sean McGreevey, university housing, presented “Ten Truths About Diversity, Multiculturalism and Social Justice: A Majority Professional’s Multicultural Journey” at the South Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls meeting, Wise, Va. 

 

Rachel Siron, graduate student, won Best Problem Solving in the Graduate Student Case Study Competition at the National Orientation Directors Association Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.  At the same conference, she co-presented “Learning How to Move Mountains with Staff Training.”

Scott Lewis, student judicial programs, co-presented “Student Suicide: Best Practices for Student Affairs Administrators, Counselors and Campus Health Service Providers,” a web seminar sponsored by the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM).  NCHERM has invited Lewis to be a recurring plenary/featured speaker on legal issues in judicial affairs at their national conferences.
 

Sean McGreevey, university housing, presented “Ten Truths About Diversity, Multiculturalism and Social Justice: A Majority Professional’s Multicultural Journey” at the South Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls meeting, Wise, Va.  McGreevey’s presentation was recognized as one of the conference’s top 21 programs.
 

Rachel Siron, graduate student, won Best Problem Solving in the Graduate Student Case Study Competition at the National Orientation Directors Association Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.  At the same conference, she co-presented “Learning How to Move Mountains with Staff Training.”
