Guide to University Life

www.carolinaalumni.org/
Linking past to future, connecting today's leaders with tomorrow's, providing
the pathway home...this has been the mission of the Carolina Alumni Association
for nearly one hundred sixty years. The relationship begins with students,
and student members comprise the largest student membership organization on
campus.
The Association's mission is to insure that every alumna and alumnus is
informed, involved and committed to the success of the University. Through
a variety of innovative programs, activities and services, the Association
reaches out to alumni around the globe.
The Greater University of South Carolina Alumni Association is a
not-for-profit 501(c)(3) membership organization chartered by the South Carolina
Secretary of State and self-governed by an elected Board of Governors. The
mailing address is Carolina Alumni Association, University of South Carolina,
Columbia, South Carolina 29208.
Garnet Circle
The Association sponsors the student leadership organization, Garnet Circle
Student Alumni Council, as a link between alumni and current students.
Garnet Circle is revered as an organization that attracts some of the
University's most capable, active student leaders. All prospective Garnet
Circle members are required to complete an application and participate in an
interview with Association staff and current Garnet Circle members.
Membership
Active members, including students, are those who have paid dues to the
Carolina Alumni Association in amounts set by the Association's Board of
Governors.
Reunions
The Association invites graduates back to campus on significant
anniversaries, both at Homecoming and for reunions. Carolina memories are
rekindled and class members are invited to contribute to a class gift.
Scholarships
Three academic merit award programs are proudly sponsored and funded by the
Association and the contributions of its members. Awards are made to
entering University freshmen, and application deadlines vary with the award
program.
The Office of Annual Giving Programs is honored to be an
integral part of Carolina’s success. The Carolina Fund encompasses a variety of
components, all of which strive to ensure that our students, faculty and staff
are provided with the best resources available.
Carolina Callers
The Carolina Callers
come from a myriad of colleges and schools and possess a great passion for USC,
and have become one of the most popular on campus jobs. These students help
secure over $1.2 million annually for scholarships, University Libraries, and
academic departments. Our state-of-the-art call center allows our students to
contact alumni, friends, parents and graduating seniors on a year-round basis.
Dollars generated through the call center help provide what tuition and state
support do not. We count on alumni to play a pivotal role in the current and
future success of the University of South Carolina. Join the Carolina Caller
team by calling 777-4705 or visiting
www.sc.edu/carolinacallers.
Family Fund
The faculty and staff
campaign at the University of South Carolina, known as the Family Fund, is one
of the nation’s top campaigns of its kind. The 28 year old campaign boasts more
than 150 volunteers from across the eight USC campuses. This $2 million dollar a
year campaign assists student scholarships, programs, and initiatives, while
also supporting faculty and staff programs that enrich professional careers
through philanthropy.
Parents Fund
By contacting parents
of current undergraduates we are able to gauge the interest of parents who go
above and beyond to ensure their son/daughter’s academic success. We ask parents
to help fund academic resources not covered by tuition. Annual Giving works
closely with the Office of Parents Programs to accomplish our fundraising goals.
Reunions
The 50th
reunions are a significant time for many graduates. These monumental
achievements are highlighted with a class gift campaign and include festivities
during Homecoming. The reunion gift committees personally contact former
classmates, some of whom they have not spoken with in decades. Carolina memories
are rekindled and a monetary commitment is secured on behalf of their reunion
class.
SEC G.O.L.D.
Challenge
Graduates Of the Last
Decade (1998-2007) compete against alumni from other southeastern conference
universities in the SEC G.O.L.D. Challenge to determine who earns
bragging rights as the southeast’s most supportive alumni. This competition is
based on participation, so no matter the size of the gift, the participations is
what counts. You can find out more about this year-long campaign by visiting the
G.O.L.D. Challenge online at
www.secchallenge.org.
Senior Gift
The Senior Gift provides graduating seniors with their first opportunity to
thank the University of South Carolina, professors and others who made a
difference to them. Seniors have the opportunity to leave their legacy at
Carolina
by making a gift
in honor of their graduating class. No matter the size
of the gift, participation is what counts.
Alumni gifts benefit
students and prove alumni are honored to have a lasting relationship with the
University of South Carolina. Whether alumni make a commitment to their Reunion
class, one of our fourteen schools or colleges, or to the Carolina Fund, they make the USC family proud. Visit the Office of Annual Giving Programs
on-line at
www.sc.edu/annualgiving.
For more information
on Annual Giving Programs please contact Lola Mauer, Director of Annual Giving
Programs, at 803-777-4092 or

Any student who has paid the University fee is eligible to obtain tickets to varsity
athletic events without an extra charge. Ticket distribution is done in the weeks prior to
each event. Those students who have not paid the University Fee may purchase tickets
directly from the Athletic Department once tickets are made available to the general
public. For more detailed information about places and times of distribution please
contact the Ticket Office at 777-4274.
Students are obligated to complete all assigned work promptly, to attend class
regularly, and to participate in whatever class discussion may occur.
Absence from more than 10 percent of the scheduled class sessions, whether
excused or unexcused, is excessive and the instructor may choose to exact a
grade penalty for such absences.
The instructor's attendance policy should be ascertained by the student at
the beginning of the semester. It is of particular importance that a
student who anticipates absences in excess of 10 percent of the scheduled class
sessions receive prior approval from the instructor before the last day to
change schedule as published in the Master Schedule of Classes.
It must be emphasized that the "10 percent rule" stated above applies to both
excused and unexcused absences. Faculty members should notify classes
specifically of the attendance policy which they intend to follow in each class.
For banking convenience automated teller machines are located on campus behind the Russell
House. In addition, several tellers from these and other banks are located around campus
and in Five Points.

guidance systems to help them make good career decisions. They can research career fields
and employers through the comprehensive Career Library.
Part-time employment programs are available which
assist students in finding career-related work experience and in earning extra money.
Opportunities are available through Cooperative Education, the Career Internship Program,
part-time job listings, and summer job listings. CareerView allows students to follow and
observe professionals in the work place to get a firsthand view of careers which hold
particular interest for them.
Full-time employment programs assist students in
initial contact with employers. Over 500 employers interview students through the
on-campus recruiting program. Hundreds more post individual jobs or use
CareerLink, a resume referral service, to identify qualified candidates.

Student
Health Services is here at the University of South Carolina for only one
reason...YOU, the student. Student Health Services
provides accessible, convenient, high quality, low cost health care. The Student
Health Services health care team is sincerely interested in your health, and
wants to be your partner in wellness.
Student Health Services
provides on-campus medical, mental health, ancillary, and health and wellness
services for students. Services include (1) ambulatory primary care at clinics
and ancillary services located at the nationally accredited Thomson Student
Health Center; (2) a comprehensive array of counseling, testing, and
psychological and psychiatric services available at the nationally accredited
Counseling and Human Development Center; and (3) a wide variety of
wellness-oriented programs and educational services offered by the
nationally accredited Health & Wellness Programs
through the Office for Campus Wellness and
the Office for Sexual Health and Violence Prevention. Additional
information on these organizations is provided below. Students are encouraged to
visit the various Student Health Services Web sites for additional information
on Student Health Services clinics, services and programs.
Eligibility, Confidentiality, and Cost
All USC Columbia campus students admitted to degree programs and enrolled in
classes are eligible to use Student Health Services clinics and services and to
participate in its various programs.
· Eligibility verification is required, and students presenting for care should
bring their student ID or other picture ID card. Student Health Services has no
authority to excuse students from classes for health-related reasons.
· Excuses are a matter between students and the concerned faculty member. Visit
validation slips will be provided upon the student’s request.
Medical and personal
information disclosed to Student Health Services providers will be treated as
privileged and confidential in accordance with
applicable law. Student Health Services will not release
information without the express consent of the patient, unless required by law,
or by the need to protect the welfare of the patient or
others .
Students are
responsible for payment of all health care related fees and charges
incurred either at Student Health facilities
or other locations.
Use of
TSHC or CHDC can
significantly reduce health care costs for students.
Student Health
Services clinics and services fees are generally lower than those charged by
community providers. Unless a medical emergency exists, students should
initially seek care at the Thomson Student Health Center (TSHC) or the
Counseling and Human Development Center (CHDC).
There
are no charges for provider visits at the TSHC or CHDC for
most full-time students and other students who pay the Health Fee portion of the
University Fee. Students who have not paid the Health Fee are charged a
fee-for-service for provider visits.
· All patients are charged at student rates for certain procedures and ancillary
services such as minor surgery, lab tests, x-rays, and prescriptions.
· Students who need specialty care, hospitalization, or other healthcare or
services not available at the TSHC or CHDC, will be referred to community
providers of their choice. Payment of community provider charges is the
student’s responsibility. Given the high cost of health care, all students are
encouraged to carry health insurance coverage.
Health Insurance
Payment for health care is the student’s responsibility, and it can be
expensive.
Student Health Services does not offer all health services that students may
need. A costly health care episode can interfere with your ability
to meet your educational goals. It is strongly recommended that all students be
covered by adequate health insurance. USC requires all international students to
be covered by an appropriate health insurance plan.
Health Insurance
Coverage: Student Health Services recommends that you check with your
parents/guardians, insurance agent, employer, or managed care organization to
determine your coverage status while you attend the University of South
Carolina. If you are enrolled in an HMO, or other managed care plan, review
their rules on how the plan provides health care when you are away at school and
cannot reasonably access network providers or “gatekeepers”. Determine if your
plan will reimburse you for services provided by Student Health Services.
Be sure to have health insurance cards and other key information with you at all
times.
Student Health Insurance Plan:
Students who need health insurance coverage should consider purchasing coverage
under the USC-sponsored student health insurance plan. Most students enrolled in
degree programs and in good academic standing are eligible to purchase this
plan. Spouses and dependent children of eligible students can also be covered.
The USC-sponsored plan meets the international student health insurance coverage
requirement.
Open enrollment periods are at the start of the Fall and Spring semesters.
The health insurance plan
sponsored by USC is also used by six other state colleges and universities in
South Carolina. It is designed to supplement primary care services available to
students through USC’s Student Health Services. Unless an exception applies,
covered students must initially present for care at Student Health Services.
Most care and services provided by Student Health are
covered at 100 percent. Referrals to network or other community
providers are issued for specialty care, hospitalization, and other health needs
not available at Student Health. The student plan provides sound, economical
coverage, with benefits designed to meet the health care needs of most
university students.
USC
sponsors the health insurance plan. It does not sell, administer, or receive any
income from the sponsored plan. All questions and inquiries concerning the plan
should be directed to the
General Agent . Visit their website at www.studentinsurance.com.
Health Insurance Cautions:
The USC sponsored plan
does have deductibles, co-payments and coverage and benefit limitations.
Provisions such as these are common, in various forms, to most health insurance
plans. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the plan prior to
making a purchase decision.
If you currently have an illness, injury or other medical condition that needs
treatment, or you have received medical treatment within the past six months,
you
probably have a pre-existing condition. Medical conditions
that are eligible for coverage under the USC-sponsored plan,
but determined to be pre-existing, are not eligible for benefits until you have
been continuously covered under the plan for twelve (12) months. Covered illness
or injury that
initially presents or
occurs after the effective date of coverage
will normally be eligible for benefits.
Students with pre-existing conditions,
such as chronic or recent illness or injury, should carefully compare plan
coverages and review options prior to switching from their current plan to the
student health plan.
Students with pre-existing conditions who must terminate coverage under their
current health plan
should discuss their situation with their current insurance carrier or agent,
and consider available continuation of coverage or conversion options, such as
COBRA, if
they wish to
remain covered for their pre-existing condition.
Emergency Coverage Plan: All
students who pay the University Health Fee are automatically covered by an
Accident and Illness emergency care supplemental insurance plan (the A&I Plan).
The A&I Plan is designed to supplement other health insurance coverage carried
by the student. The A&I Plan reimburses students up to $500 for out-of-pocket
costs, such as deductibles and co-payments, associated with treatment of true
medical emergencies.

provided on the Columbia campus. Ordained chaplains, other University-recognized
religious counselors, and student leaders from various denominations, faiths,
and organizations serve the campus and are available to students as pastors,
mentors, and counselors. Some, the members of the Carolina Campus Ministries,
are professional ministers and directors of religious groups, either housed in
their own centers or using space on campus for their events; others are students
in the University who direct and coordinate activities among their peers.
Activities and events are open to all students.

organizations. Sports clubs are formed by students who share a common interest in a
