Be a mentor: Helping Others Learn the Way to Personal Success
Peer mentors are an important part of CarolinaLIFE™ Program. The primary role of peer mentors is to provide social and academic support to students enrolled in the program. We believe that peer mentors have a significant contribution to students' personal success by facilitating a positive experience in the collegiate environment.
Objective: To assist in offering a positive college life experience to CarolinaLIFE™ students while on USC campus.
What is a Mentor?
A mentor is a similar-age individual who is willing to spend his or her time and expertise to facilitate the development of a less experienced person by participating in social or cultural activities or providing academic and informational support to his or her mentee.
What are the Mentor's Responsibilities?
R eciprocity Give and receive respect, information, and support
E xpertise Apply your knowledge in assisting a less experienced person
S upport Lead and guide CarolinaLIFETM students in various areas
P unctuality Arrive on time for scheduled meetings and activities
E ngage Commit to mentoring a CarolinaLIFETM student in different activities
C ommunication Keep in touch with the program coordinator
T rust Keep personal information about CarolinaLIFETM students confidential
What Type of Mentor I Can Be?
Academic:
An academic mentor will provide support to CarolinaLIFE™ students in various academic areas:
- Completing course work assignments
- Using library resources to locate different information
- Improving study skills
- Accessing electronic resources to communicate with peers or instructors
- Strengthening time management and organizational skills.
Social:
A social mentor will assist CarolinaLIFETM students in various student life activities. These activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Attending cultural and athletic events;
- Participating in community events, social organizations or student government activities;
- Hanging out for lunch or dinner;
- Working out;
- Sharing student life experiences;
- Be a friend!
Forms:
*** All mentors will attend an orientation session, in which we will outline and discuss specific roles, responsibilities, and schedule.
