America Reads and Hope Worldwide are both tutoring opportunities
that can be done as a volunteer position or a paid position if you
have a work study award.*
America Reads
America Reads is a federal program that enlists college student to
help teach youth across America to improve their reading skills.
Volunteers can work 5 to 20 hours a week in one of 5 elementary
schools (1st - 4th graders) in the Richland One School District (all
schools are not more than 5 miles from USC campus). Your schedule
will be set up directly through the school, and the schedules are
often very accommodating for students. The hours will be during the
day time from 8am to 2:30pm.
The application process is not competitive, applicants need only to pass a state background check to be accepted into the program. To apply for America Reads complete and submit the application below. Our office, Community Service Programs, will have a short 30 minute orientation where you will fill out paper work and gain a better understanding of how America Reads works.
Once the background check is successfully completed you will be placed in a school to begin tutoring. Each tutoring experience is different - You may work with one student, you may work with many. With a work study award the position pays $8 an hour.
