Sponsored by Community Service Programs- Campus Life Center, the Alternative Breaks (AB) program consists of substance-free, community service-learning trips during the university’s fall, winter and spring breaks. AB participants travel locally and nationally in teams to different cities, engage in active service, and have the opportunity to gain new perspectives on social issues while meeting community needs, and learning about and building upon community assets.

Alternative Breaks sends students each year on service-learning trips across the nation to address pressing social, political and environmental issues. Students work with issues of disaster relief, environmental restoration, HIV/AIDS, education, homelessness, poverty and immigration. AB’s main goal is to educate participants about the root causes of these issues, while also making an immediate difference in the community.

The AB program is an active member of Break Away: The Alternative Breaks Connection. As a part of that membership, AB adheres to the Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break as described by Break Away®
