SOUTH CAROLINA PRISONER ADVOCACY NETWORK
Volunteers Needed
“Many of us who have been close to the criminal justice system in
South Carolina are painfully aware that children raised in poverty
are fodder for our prisons. Various people have struggled with this
problem, striving to find means of diverting our youth from crime.
South Carolina continues to incarcerate a greater proportion of our
citizens than most other states.
Meanwhile, the devastating effect on the economy is all too clear.
We are spending money to maintain this prison system, which is
sorely needed for nurturing programs, which would lead our youth to
become healthy, productive citizens.
Jim
Casey was founder and long time CEO of the United Parcel Service.
He observed, “his least prepared and least effective employees were
those…who…had spent much of their youth in institutions”. Let’s
face it!! Prison does not prepare young people for life.
Eventually, Jim Casey established the Annie E. Casey Foundation in
his mother’s name. This group has had considerable impact in
improving the chances of “at risk” youth, of facing a brighter
future.
In
South Carolina we have not demonstrated the ability to work together
to solve our problems. Perhaps, one of our foremost faults is to
rely on incarceration as a means of solving all our social ills.
Shouldn’t mature and intelligent people be able to establish a
collaborative effort, along the lines of the Casey Foundations
recommendations, to guide our youth into productive adulthood?”
Eunice McAllister is the founder and chairperson of the South
Carolina Prisoner Advocacy Network (SPAN). She would like to
invite a diverse group of South Carolina citizens to come together
for broad discussion of the destructive effect that poverty has on
the youth of South Carolina.
If
you are interested in volunteering with this advocacy group, please
contact Ms. Eunice McAllister @ 803-254-9869. Evening hours are
okay, up to 10pm.
