CORNERSTONES OF GREEK LIFE

The cornerstones of Greek Life are, Scholarship, Service, Friendship and Leadership.


Scholarship

Students involved in Greek Life at USC have consistently achieved higher Grade Point Averages than Non-Greek students.  There are three Greek Honoraries here at Carolina, Order of Omega, Rho Lambda and Gamma Sigma Alpha.

Friendship

Friendship and social activity is a major component of Greek Life.  Students involved in Greek organizations make friends that will last a lifetime.  In order to promote unity and friendship among Greeks all over campus, Sorority and Fraternity Council host the following events. 

 

- President's Dinners
 Greek Day
- Greek Week
- Greek Women's Day

 

*Each individual organization also hosts mixers and social events.

Service

Giving back to the community is a major aspect of fraternity and sorority life. Each year organizations participate in service projects and philanthropies to help the community. In 2007, Carolina Greek organizations donated approximately $132,000 dollars and 8,500 hours to service agencies in the Columbia, SC area.

Leadership

Involvement in a Greek-letter organization provides a valuable opportunity to influence campus culture and be a leader in the community.  Greek students are involved in their individual chapters as well as many other student organizations on campus.

Sorority Council

Sorority Council is the governing body for all sororities on campus.

Fraternity Council

Fraternity Council is the governing body for all fraternities on campus.

Alpha Series
A
seminar designed to educate new members on all aspects of Greek life.  The top 5% of each pledge class is invited to attend. New members will learn how to better maintain the image of their group, how to encourage positive behavior, and how to avoid pitfalls.  It is also an excellent way to develop friendships within the Greek community.

Greek Camp

Greek Camp is a leadership retreat for new members of sororities and fraternities.  There are a series of educational session facilitated by chapter leaders and Office of Greek Life staff.

New Member Seminar

The guest speaker for the 2007 New Member Seminar is National Speaker Mr. David Stollman. His topic is entitled "Buy In or Get Out" which inspires students who care about the core values of Greek life - scholarship, service, leadership and friendship. He challenges members to embrace the best and get rid of the rest. David discusses major issues facing Greek life.

Students involved in Greek Life at the University of South Carolina have the opportunity to participate in the following conferences:
