J-1 OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
ACADEMIC TRAINING
Academic Training is a work authorization
allowing a J-1 exchange visitor to gain experience in his/her
field of study, generally after completion of studies. Academic
Training can also be used during school breaks (up to 40
hours/week) and while school is in session (up to 20
hours/week). Employment must be directly related to the exchange
visitor’s area of study.
The maximum length of employment is 18 months. However, if the
exchange visitor has been in J-1 status for less than 18 months,
then the exchange visitor is entitled to an employment period no
longer than the time spent in J-1 status. J-1 doctoral exchange
visitors are permitted up to 36 months for the purpose of
fulfilling a post-doctoral appointment.
The program sponsor must approve Academic Training and update
this information on the DS-2019 document. The exchange visitor
should contact the program sponsor to determine eligibility and
application requirements.
Students who are under USC sponsorship must provide the
following:
1. A letter from the academic advisor which specifies
-
The goals and objectives of the
specific training program
-
A description of the training program,
including its location, the name and address of the training
supervisor, number of hours per week, and dates of the
training
-
How the training relates to the
student's major field of study
-
Why it is an integral or critical part
of the academic program of the exchange visitor student
2. An offer letter of employment
Deadline to apply: Deadlines will vary according to each
sponsor's requirements. Early planning is strongly advised since
a job offer is needed to approve academic training. Students
under USC sponsorship must submit their application materials to
an international student advisor before completion of studies.
