FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FUTURE STUDENTS

1. What is the average cost for living expenses?
For one year, we have calculated living expenses to cost between $11,000 and $12,000 U.S. Dollars.

2. How do I enter the US?
Have your I-20 or DS-2019 and passport for yourself and your dependents available in your carry-on bag so you will be prepared to show them to the US official. On the airplane you will be asked to complete a short arrival/departure form. When you deplane, follow directions for non-citizen entry. At the airport, a U.S. official will interview you and verify all of your paperwork. Once admitted, you will receive an immigration stamp and proceed to baggage claim and U.S. Customs.

3. What is the purpose of my entry visa?
Your entry visa is like a ticket to the United States; it is required for entry. You will notice on your visa that you have been granted 1, 2 or multiple entries and this determines how many times you will be able to use the visa for entry into the United States. Once it has expired, you will need to apply for a new entry visa in your home country if you want to re-enter the United States as an F-1 or J-1 student.

4. Is there temporary housing when I arrive?

Temporary housing at the Bates House (an on-campus residence hall) is available the week before campus residence halls officially open for the fall semester. If you are arriving at USC for any other semester, you may make arrangements with a local hotel

5. Do I need to check in with International Programs for Students?
Yes. You must report to our office before you can register for your classes. You will need to bring your immigration documents to be copied and attend an immigration session. The entire check-in procedure should last no longer than 2 hours.

6. If I have an assistantship, will I still need to provide financial certification?
If your assistantship covers your total tuition and living expenses estimate, then you will not need any further certification. If it does not cover all your expenses, then you will need to provide certification for the remaining balance.

7. How long does it take to get an I-20?
It only takes about 3 business days for us to complete your I-20 once you have turned in all your documents.

8. Can my I-20 be express mailed?
Our office cannot express mail student documents. If you want your I-20 express mailed, please provide a credit card number with an expiration date or pre-paid FedEx account. Some academic departments may offer to cover the shipping costs for a new student. You will need to contact your department to make arrangements.
