SOCIAL SECURITY SUPPORT LETTERS

Please note that as of October 13, 2004, the Social Security Administration requires that international students on the F-1 visa who will be working on-campus present an employment offer letter upon applying for a Social Security Number. This affects both graduate and undergraduate student workers. Letters should be on departmental letterhead and include the following information:

- Name of the student employee
- Job description
- Anticipated or actual employment start date
- Number of hours per week the student is expected to work
- Employer identification number
- Employer contact information, including the telephone number and the name of the F-1 student's immediate supervisor
- Original signature
- Signatory's title
- Date

A sample employment offer letter may be found here. Early preparation of these letters will expedite the assignment of a Social Security Number. Once completed, the student should bring the letter to International Programs for Students for additional processing.
