TAXES
Every international student who has earned
any income in the United States must file Federal and South
Carolina State taxes each year while present in the United
States.
If you have lived and worked in more than
one state in one year, you must file for each state.
Certain tax treaties may exempt you from
paying taxes in the United States. However, even if exempt, a
tax return claiming the exemption must be filed.
Students who did not earn income last year,
must file the Non-Employed 8843 Form.
If you are employed on-campus and already
have a Social Security Number, you should submit a form IS-3S to
the International Tax Coordinator in the Byrnes Building, Room
212.
International Programs for Students cannot
offer individual assistance for filing taxes. Students who need
tax advice are strongly encouraged to consult a tax preparation
specialist.
Things You Need to
Know about Taxes An Individual
Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number
only available for certain nonresident and resident aliens who
do not have and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security
Number (SSN). It is a 9-digit number, beginning with the Number
"9", formatted like an SSN (9XX-XX-XXXX). It is issued by the
Internal Revenue Service and is used for federal tax reporting
only. Individuals must have a filing requirement and file a
valid federal income tax return to receive an ITIN, unless they
meet an exception.
