YOUR I-20

After your admission to USC and receipt of the required documents, USC will issue you the I-20 document so you can apply for an F-1 visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.  Be sure to have your I-20 in your possession when you enter the U.S. and carry your I-20 and all other immigration documents on your person when you travel to the U.S.  Do not pack them in your luggage.  If you are already studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa, your previous school must authorize your transfer release date in SEVIS to USC so that you can be issued an I-20 by USC.

Please note that if you use the I-20 form issued by USC to enter the U.S., U.S. immigration regulations require that you report to and enroll at our school. You will receive additional information regarding your F-1 status after your arrival at USC.

The following explanations are listed out in the order that the information appears on your I-20.

Student Information:

It is important that this information matches the information that is on your passport.

School Information:

This lists the name and address of the school that you will be attending once you are granted your F-1 status. Please note that you must enroll and attend classes at the school that is on the I-20 that you used to enter the country.

3-6. Student’s Purpose:
This information is specific to your program of study. If you are a new student studying in the U.S. for the first time, then you are entering with an initial status and it will be indicated in #3. The rest of the information reports what degree level you are pursuing, the major you are studying, the estimated length of time you will need to obtain your degree, and whether your major requires English proficiency.

7-8. Financial Certification:
The information in #7 estimates the total cost for the length of time you are studying up to a maximum of 12 months. #8 identifies the type of funding you have provided for yourself, whether it is personal or an assistantship/scholarship. You will need to show proof of what you have listed in #8 when you apply for your visa and upon entry into the U.S.

9. Remarks:
If there is any important information you need to know before your arrival, it will be listed here.

10-11. Required Signatures:
When you receive your I-20, #10 will have already been signed by the school official that issued your I-20. Please read page 2 of the I-20 which explains your requirements under the F visa. #11 is where you need to print and sign your name once you have received and read the I-20. If you are under 18, there is a line underneath the student line, for a parent or legal guardian to sign. Your I-20 must be signed by both you and the school official before you apply for the visa.
