Who We Are Looking For
The Carolina Judicial Council seeks to embody a membership reflective of the diversity of our campus in all aspects. We look for students of different ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds as well as students of all majors and studies. The Carolina Judicial Council is not a Pre-Law organization. Our membership includes majors in Political Science, Religious Studies, Music, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Criminal Justice, Physics, Business, and a number of other programs. Likewise, the Judicial council does not adhere to any political leanings or movements. We seek the input of different social, religious, and political standards and strive to make all feel welcome. We value this diverse make-up, because it enables us to more effectively understand the environment students are coming from when they choose to have our body hear their case. If you would like more information on the composition of our membership, you will find a link below with our demographics from our 2009 recruitment efforts.
How to Join
The Carolina Judicial Council conducts their annual recruitment during the fall semester of each academic year. New members are selected by application at which point they will continue through the process until selection. This process is outlined below.
In order to be selected, a prospective member must submit an application, participate in one group session, and schedule one 10-15 minute interview. More information on each of our recruitment events can be found below under Recruitment Events.
If you are interested in joining, but feel you cannot meet these requirements, please contact the Vice President of Recruitment. This contact information can be found under the Members section.
Recruitment Events
Information Sessions: Information sessions are small events typically held in the Russell House where any interested student can come hear a brief description of the CJC from the Vice President of Recruitment and current members of the general body and learn about the application proess. Similarly, current members will lead and participate with prospective members in one of the Council's exciting and unique training activities. We strongly encourage interested students to attend at least one of these sessions and ask questions to learn more about the Council to see if it would be right for them. Information Sessions typically last about 20-30 minutes. Students are welcome to come late or leave early. Dress is casual.
Information Session Dates for Fall 2011:
Day 1 – TBD
Day 2 – TBD
Group Process: Group Process is the Council's second level of the application process. Interested students will participate in 2-3 small group style activities that the CJC typically uses throughout the year for training and community building. Approximately 2-4 current members will be placed with 2-4 prospective members to discuss various issues. These activities allow the Council to evaluate the potential effect a prospective member may be able to contribute to the Council, particularly during deliberation sessions in hearings. We are specifically looking for those who are open-minded, able to handle conflict with respect and an even temperament, and are able to voice their opinions comfortably.Dress is business casual.

Interviews are typically held during the evenings a week to two weeks after information sessions and last for about 10-15 minutes.
