Students ‘Share the Dream’ of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
University of South Carolina students will celebrate the life of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. with a
day of community service, a poster contest and an exhibit of
photographs, writings and videos.
The MLK Day of Service, “Share the Dream,” will be held Monday, Jan.
21, 2008. Student,
faculty and staff volunteers will gather at 9:30 a.m. at the Russell
House University Union second-floor
lobby for an opening ceremony and service assignments. Volunteers
then will ride buses to about a
dozen local sites, where they will participate in service projects
before returning to campus at 2:30 p.m.
Entries to the poster contest, which is open to students, student
organizations and University
101 classes, will reflect King’s legacy and the Day of Service
theme, “Share the Dream.” All entries will
be displayed in the Russell House second-floor lobby Jan. 14 – 21,
2008. The winning poster will be
announced during the Day of Service opening ceremony on Jan. 21,
2008, and the poster will remain on
display until Jan. 25. Students who created the winning poster will
win a pizza party for up to 40 people.
For more information on or to register for the Day of Service and
the poster contest, go to
www.sa.sc.edu/communityservice/mlk.htm.
Students can learn more about King at an exhibit of books,
photographs, posters, writings and
videos. The exhibit will be in the second-floor Russell House lobby
and will be on display Jan. 14 – 25,
2008.
The Day of Service, poster contest and exhibit are coordinated by
Community Service Programs and Carolina Service Council (CSC), a
student organization.
Junior Kathy Niu, director of CSC’s MLK committee, said that members
of her organization hope that these activities will show students
the value of community service.
“As always, we plan to continue the tradition of service and
celebration by providing volunteers with meaningful experiences that
will encourage them to make a lifelong commitment to community
service,” she said.
