INITIATIVE 


Program’s Purpose:

The purpose of the institute is to provide an environment for African American males whereby they can develop a connectedness to the University of South Carolina and its community. Additionally, the institute seeks to motivate and empower African American males to assume roles of leadership and expose participants to proven strategies for creating greater professional and personal success by promoting academic excellence through mentorship, workshops/seminars, and focus groups.

 

Program’s Main Components:

The main components of the institute are comprised of the four target areas below. The components will be accomplished through speakers, workshops and mentorships.

●   Personal/Professional Development

      Proactive Leadership

      Accountability/Self-discipline

      Intellectual Development

 

Objectives:

      Maintain the development of leadership skills, discipline and accountability

      Establish and build systems of support and community

      Promote and provide a deeper sense of understanding of the African American male and bridge
       the gaps that exist at predominantly white institutions

 

Learning Outcomes:

      The student will develop interpersonal and practical competencies

      The student will manage the college experience to achieve academic success

      The student will have an awareness of social responsibility
