Identity Acknowledgement & Coming Out
The process of coming out is different for everyone. Whether you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or an ally, when you come out you encounter a unique set of issues based on your circumstances – including your age, location, familial status, class, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and countless other factors. For everyone, though, coming out – and facing the challenges that come with it – is an act of bravery, authenticity and openness.
LGBT Programs and Services is here to support you by providing a safe space where you are able to talk one-on-one about your experiences, learn about student organizations, attend educational as well as cultural programming, and find supportive resources.
University of South Carolina students can also meet with counselors in the Counseling and Human Development Center for one-on-one support as well as weekly group support. Please visit the Counseling and Human Development Center here.
Lastly, Safe Zone Allies are a great resource to turn to. They are prepared to offer support, guidance, and information/resources. Visit the Safe Zone Ally Program webpage here.
