ORGANIZATIONS
Association of African-American Students (AAAS):
AAAS was founded in 1968 to unify African American students on
campus, promote unity among all students and faculty of the
university, to motivate the community, members, and university to
achieve higher social, educational, and economic status through
service projects, cultural programming, and special events. AAAS
currently has a diverse general body composed of more than 500
members, making it the largest organization under the OMSA umbrella
and one of the largest student organizations at USC. The
organization has a full-functioning executive board and seven
committees including Freshmen Council, Cultural Awareness, Special
Events, Community Service, Membership, Publicity, and Voices of
Color, the organizations monthly newsletter.
BGLSA
BGLSA serves to provide information on support and social systems
and networks for GLBT students and allies at the University of South
Carolina, as well as to provide a
forum for open discussion and positive interaction with the broader
USC community in order to promote better awareness of bisexual, gay,
lesbian and transgender students and allies.
Brothers of Nubian Descent (BOND)
B.O.N.D is an informative discussion group, focusing on the trials
and pressures facing black males today, not only on the USC campus,
but in the state of South Carolina and the U.S. as well. The
organization seek ways to improve all aspects of the lives of black
men by a means of open communication through discussion, planning
and execution. Our goal is to improve the success of black males
here at USC while also serving the community and attracting more to
apply and attend. B.O.N.D. fosters and supports intellectual
dialogue by creating a cultural support group.
Chosen Gospel Ensemble: Created to provide
cultural inspiration at campus events, Chosen sings music that has
come out of the African-American worship experience.
EMPOWER
This peer group provides a platform for students to challenge
stereotypes, to create dialogue about similarities and differences,
and to promote cross-cultural awareness and understanding.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP): The purpose of NAACP is to provide a
medium for the exchange of ideas to confront issues that face the
community and work toward solutions to solve those issues. By
educating students, facilitating meetings, and
other special events, NAACP strives to make a difference at USC.
SAVVY
The purpose of SAVVY is to provide assistance to
multicultural female students looking for a way to maximize their
chances at self-improvement and enhance their abilities during their
affiliation here at USC.
Student Association for Latin American (SALA):
The first student organization recognized for Latino students, SALAs
purpose is to promote cultural awareness with regard to Latin
American issues, countries, and people, on-campus, both inside and
outside of the classroom.
