This event introduces the OPPA staff and talks about what our office does and the services we provide to students. The Asst. Dean of Admissions, Lewis Hutchinson and a few of his students come to discuss what types of things he expects out of his applicants and the students discussed their experience in undergrad. This helps to connect OPPA with the pre-law students before they disperse into the many majors at USC.
OPPA holds two LSAC workshops for pre-law students to walk them through the application process. We take them step-by-step through each part of the application and make sure they understand what they need in order to apply and where they can get these items. These workshops are crucial to the understanding of the application and also helps those who are applying next year a good jump on their work.
Law Professional Meet and Greet
This catered professional development event gives students the opportunity to converse with professionals around the community to make connections, discuss internships, and learn more about different careers within the law. Our guests from around the community have included: Attorney General McMaster, Councilwoman Devine, Judge John Few, and Professors Jay Bender, J.D. and Joel Samuels, J.D.
Over 60 law schools from around the country come to join USC at our annual Law Fair. Students discuss opportunities, admissions, and it is a great chance for students to speak with schools they would otherwise not be able to meet with personally due to travel constraints. Our students are able to receive fee waivers for many schools and get quality face-time with those schools that they had already applied.
Mock Admissions Workshop
Charleston Law School Associate Dean of Admission John Benfield makes the trip to USC for the annual Mock Admissions Workshop to help students understand the admissions process “on the other side of the table” and what they need to be a competitive applicant for law school. Students are able to see what admissions councils look for in their students and how they make their acceptance decisions.
New Pre-Law Living and Learning Community partners with Criminal Justice and Political Science
Housing and OPPA have re-vamped the LLC for pre-law students, changing it to Law, Justice, and Politics with both freshman and upperclassmen students living in South Quad in the Fall. This will allow for a great mentoring program to begin and also give more range to the speakers and events the community can put on. The community is working to tie in a Spring Break trip to Washington.
Monthly Class Visits to Law School
In partnership with USC Law School, every month OPPA will offer a day for students to visit a law school class at the Law School for students to get a feel for what law school is really like and see if this is the career path for them.
