University of South Carolina Parent Updates – April
1, 2008
Carolina parents,
The end of the spring semester
is just under four weeks away! Spring has finally
arrived in Columbia, and while your student may want
to spend more time enjoying the warmer temperatures,
encourage him or her to start preparing for final
projects and exams now. Final exams start on April
30 and end on May 7. Commencement exercises will
take place on May 9 and 10.
The Office of Parents Programs
has a new e-mail address! Please set your filters to
allow messages from
scparents@sc.edu. Also, please use this new
e-mail address to contact us with any questions.
Here are a few updates from the
University:
*All residence halls will
officially close at noon on Friday, May 9.
Graduating seniors may remain until noon on Sunday,
May 11. Residents who are not participating in
commencement exercises or Maymester classes are
required to vacate their rooms within 24 hours after
their last exam. (This allows staff members to start
preparing for May and summer housing.) For more
information on procedures for moving out of the
residence halls, visit
www.housing.sc.edu.
*Tara Scheidt, a junior from
China Grove, N.C., majoring in international
business and economics, has been named the
University’s Outstanding Woman of the Year for 2008.

*Nearly 300 advocates for the
University met with more than 45 state legislators
on March 26 for the Carolina Alumni Association’s
Fifth Annual Carolina Day at the Statehouse. As part
of the Carolina Action Network, which is the Alumni
Association’s legislative advocacy program, the
event is held each year to let Carolina alumni and
supporters meet one-on-one with state lawmakers to
enlist their support for the University and inform
them why a strong University of South Carolina
benefits the entire state. For more information and
to become an advocate, visit

Finally, the April e-newsletter
is attached. It includes articles on encouraging
sustainability on campus, understanding compulsive
overeating disorder, staying connected with
siblings, and making move-out day less stressful.

phone call or e-mail away, and we encourage your
feedback!
