Message
from Dr. Andrew Sorensen – October 29, 2007
To The Carolina Family,
This is a profoundly sad time for our
University of South Carolina family. As most of you know, seven
young lives were lost in a house fire at Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.,
early Sunday.
Six of these promising young people were
students at the University of South Carolina, and a seventh was from
Clemson University.
As we await updates from officials in North
Carolina, we are struggling to deal with ineffable sadness, and we
are entering a grieving process through which there are no short
cuts. Yet while we
grieve, we must remember the families and communities where these
students lived, and I ask to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
In the upcoming days and weeks we will grieve
in different ways and turn to our families, our friends, our clergy,
our colleagues and our larger communities for strength and support.
Let us remember that, as members of the university family, we are
all connected and feel the tragic loss of these young people. The
words of the Anglican priest, John Donne, that "No man is an
island," resonate with a bittersweet truth today.
Essential to the grieving and the healing
process is the creation of appropriate ways for expressing our
feelings and for honoring our students. As we receive more
information, our university staff will work with the families and
friends to plan services and memorials. Information about these
events will be posted on the university's home page.
In the meantime, I remind all students that
Rutledge Chapel is open for reflection and for prayer, and
counselors are available at our counseling center in the Byrnes
Building. Students also may find help from clergy and their
residence hall advisers.
We are all diminished by this loss. Our sadness
is profound. But I have faith that the strength of our University of
South Carolina family will sustain us all in the days and weeks to
come.
Sincerely Yours,
Andrew Sorensen
University awaits confirmation from N.C. officials on fire – October
29, 2007
Dear parents:
University of South Carolina administrators are
still awaiting official confirmation from authorities in Ocean Isle
Beach, N.C., about the fate of students who were staying at a house
that caught fire early Sunday morning.
Dr. Dennis Pruitt, the university's vice
president for student affairs, said 13 students, including 12 from
the university, were at the house. "Authorities have reported seven
perished and we believe six of those were from the University of
South Carolina," he said. "We need to wait, though, until we get
confirmation from North Carolina."
Sunday evening, University President Dr. Andrew
Sorensen tried to express his grief by quoting a famous verse-"no
man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the
continent"-from 16th century Anglican priest and poet John Donne.
"If I may adapt that observation to the 21st
century and the University of South Carolina," Sorensen said, "no
Gamecock is an island. When any one member of our family is lost,
every one of us is diminished. I'm profoundly saddened, as are all
members of Gamecock Nation, by these tragic deaths."
Dr. Sorensen has made contact Monday with the
parents of students we believe to be victims, offering the
University's sympathy and support in the wake of this tragedy.
As more information becomes available to the
University, it will be posted on the University's Web site,
www.sc.edu. Please visit
that site for more information.
Any member of the Carolina community who wishes
to seek assistance from a counselor may call the Counseling and
Human Development Center at 803-777-5223 or visit the center on the
seventh floor of the Byrnes Building (on Sumter Street).
Students who live in residence halls can contact their
resident advisers or University Housing at 803-777-4283.
Carolina Campus Ministries are also available; information on
registered religious organizations is online at
www.sa.sc.edu/stlife/rrwccm.htm.
If you have an urgent concern about how your
student is handling the grief we all are feeling today, please call
the Parents Assistance Line at 1-800-868-6752.
We will try to ensure your student receives the attention he
or she requires.
