DIVISION MEETINGS | READING PROGRAM | JOB SHADOWING | IDEAPOP!

Division-Sponsored Opportunities

The Professional Development Team for the Division of Student Affairs and Department of Academic Support at the University of South Carolina plans and coordinates a variety of opportunities for Division staff to engage in professional development. These include:

Division Meetings

Division Meetings are held monthly and are offered through one of three formats: Author’s Forum (features a keynote speaker who is the author of relevant reading material); National Trend Watch (features a keynote speaker who is an well-known expert on a current topic in higher education); and General (features a keynote speaker who works for the University or involves round-tables among Division staff related to designated topics). Practically Speaking

Practically Speaking discussions follow many of our Author's Forums and National Trend Watch Division Meetings. While the Division Meetings may be global in nature, the PS discussions are designed to be University of South Carolina specific and are an opportunity for participants to discuss practical applications of the content covered earlier that morning. Don't pass up these unique opportunities to consider how theory might translate to practice right here at the University of South Carolina!

E-Specially For You

E-Specially For You is a "how-to" workshop series designed to help staff become more familiar with a variety of skills and programs. Although there is a focus on technology, E-Specially For You will also cover topics such as relaxation in the workplace and supervising students. A schedule of E-Specially For You workshops can be found on the PD Events Calendar. Make sure you don't miss out on these practical programs.

Reading Program

The Reading Program is back this year but with a new twist. With a broad range of personal development articles, the Reading Program is now easily accessible from the comfort of your own office with just the click of a button. Articles will be available on the PD website at the beginning of each month, but the discussion will now take form through online comments on the PD website. Check out topics and dates for the Reading Program on the PD Events Calendar.

Job Shadowing

The Job Shadowing program is a professional development opportunity accessible to full-time professionals and graduate students in the HESA program. Job Shadowing allows full-time professionals a chance to facilitate continued learning about services and resources on campus. Full-time professionals need the consent of a supervisor to be able to participate in the program. Graduate students can take advantage of Job Shadowing as an additional occasion for practical experience. While assistantships and practicum allow for in-depth involvement and investment with a number of offices, Job Shadowing provides a glance at what other departments in the Division of Student Affairs and Department of Academic Support do. The Job Shadowing program is self-initiated and entails observing the daily routines and activities of a full-time staff member who has volunteered to serve as a host.

IdeaPOP!

This annual all-day professional conference centered around a theme, provides a unique opportunity for Division of Student Affairs and Department of Academic Support staff to learn from expert peers in the Division, some of the University of South Carolina’s top faculty members, and distinguished visiting speakers. Featured pre-conference guest speakers or special tours of campus facilities may be offered the day before.

For questions regarding any of these opportunities, please contact a member of the professional development team.
