Individual Development Planning

Individual Development Planning is an important part of the Division of Student Affairs and Department of Academic Support at the University of South Carolina. With the input of their supervisors, Division Staff are asked to complete two documents annually to assist the Professional Development Team in planning quality professional development opportunities that meet staff needs.

Core Competencies Assessment (CCA) – Staff will self-rank their current and desired level of competency on 37 core competencies identified by the Division of Student Affairs and Department of Academic Support as important for student affairs practitioners to possess. They will then prioritize the four core competencies they seek to work toward improving in the coming year.

Individual Development Plan (IDP) – At the beginning of the planning year staff will complete Part 1 of the form to identify specific goals and objectives that will assist them in improving in the four competencies they have chosen as priorities on the Core Competencies Assessment. At the end of the planning year staff will return to complete Part 2 of the form documenting their progress on their goals and objectives.

When are my CCA and IDP forms Due?

* The Professional Development Team for the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support uses the data from each year’s CCA & IDP to plan the coming year’s events. Our planning retreat is held in May each Spring. With this in mind, please complete your CCA & IDP for the coming year on Reading Day each year (Reading Day typically falls during the first week of April). If your office cannot meet the April Reading Day deadline, please strive to complete the documents at your earliest possible convenience prior to July 1. Remember that as you complete your CCA & IDP for each coming year you will also need to “close out” your IDP from the previous year by reporting your progress in Part 2 of the IDP. The CCA & IDP forms for the previous academic year will no longer be accessible from the PD Team website after September 15th each year. This is your final opportunity to complete the IDP form for the previous year and submit your CCA & IDP forms for the coming year.

Staff hired mid-year are encouraged to complete a CCA and IDP shortly after their date of hire for the remainder of that academic year and then adapt to the timeline above.

*Note: The Professional Development Team uses competency-related data from the forms only. All personally identifiable information is removed and members of the PD Team will not see your individual information.
