Event: Web Conference
Topic: "Using Innovations in First Year Advising to Enhance Retention and Graduation"
Location:DEIS Conference Room in the sub-level of the Law Center on Main Street.
Time: 1:00-2:30pm

A summary of the web-conference program is included below, and you may click on this link for additional details https://www.academicimpressions.com/web_conferences/1105_innovations_advising.php

Please rsvp to Art Farlowe, Undergraduate Coordinator for Psychology and chair of the Retention Committee's sub-group on Academic Advising, at afarlowe@gwm.sc.edu if you would like to attend.

Summary of Program:
Increasing enrollments and tight budgets have made it difficult for advising administrators and academic advisors to establish a one-to-one connection with their freshman populations in an effective and efficient manner. However, if advising offices become creative in their approach to student advising, they can still positively impact freshman retention, academic performance, and student satisfaction measures.

Some institutions are successfully implementing "outside the box" initiatives that meld traditional individual advising and small group sessions with e-mail, instant messenger, phone, and outreach programs at various residential locations and on- and off-campus sites where freshmen congregate. These programs, which start early with pre-orientation advising contacts, facilitate a smooth and successful transition from high school to college life for students and foster a spirit of interdepartmental collaboration on campus.

The Using Innovations in First Year Advising to Enhance Retention and Graduation web conference will take an in-depth look at strategies and techniques that have proven successful for a variety of institutions, including the University of Central Florida. Special emphasis will be placed on innovative advising programs, second-year transitions, assessment tools and the resulting impact on retention and graduation.

"Toward a Scholarship of Practice"
In his article entitled "Student Affairs Scholarship (Re?)Considered: Toward a Scholarship of Practice," Stanley Carpenter writes, "Being a good person or "good with students" is not enough to be a student affairs professional any more than doctors or lawyers or mechanics are valued for their affability. A scholarly practitioner has obligations to clients, to peers, and to his or her employing institution." In this session we will discuss these obligations, what is meant by a "scholarship of practice" and how we may incorporate scholarship in our work.
