Topic: Strategies for Helping First Generation and Low-income Students Succeed in College
Location:Russell House Ballroom
Time: 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.
More Info: Abstract
USC has recently rolled out a 'Gamecock Guarantee' to welcome
low-income, and often first generation, students to our campus. You
will find these capable students in your Honors, Capstone Scholars and
general classes across campus. It is timely that Dr. Tinto will
describe the major findings from a study of the impact of learning
communities on the success of first-generation college students and
those from families with low-income. The study uses both quantitative
longitudinal survey and qualitative case study and interview methods.
Dr. Tinto will also discuss general strategies for promoting academic
success.
About the Presenter

Syracuse University. A graduate of the University of Chicago with a PhD
in education and sociology, he is a nationally recognized authority on
student persistence and the author of Leaving College: Rethinking the
Causes and Cures of Student Attrition (Chicago: The University of

learning communities on student attainment and on the character of
graduate student persistence.
