Model for Professional Travel
University Mission Critical: Travel that must occur to accomplish and support the University's mission. Examples include: admissions recruitment, interview travel for key leadership positions, attendance at meetings required by grants or other University of South Carolina approved contractual agreements, travel directed by University officials.
Essential Job Requirements: Travel related to essential requirements that must be met in order to effectively perform routine duties. Examples include: Activities associated with maintaining licensure or certifications required by the job, specialized training deemed essential to meet specific job requirements, attending procurement contract, or similar meetings with government agencies, vendors or suppliers, recruiting and interviewing potential employees, representation by significant unit leaders at key meetings.
Endorsed Program Enhancements: Travel related to program enhancements that are endorsed by the University of South Carolina leadership. Examples include: visits to other institutions that have desirable programs/facilities in place, conference attendance for purposes related to establishing new/cutting edge programs, Institutional representation at conferences/meetings deemed important for institutional reputation, travel related to accomplishing specific action item in unit's strategic plan.
Professional Development: Travel related to job responsibilities that contribute to the maintenance, currency, or acquisition of individual skills, knowledge and abilities. Examples include: Attending professional meetings with direct job performance implications, presenting appropriate papers, programs, or research findings, presenting seminars or workshops, development opportunities for new professionals, attendance at meetings related to leadership role in professional organization.
Personal Development: Travel related to learning that contributes to personal and career growth and development. Examples include: Attending conferences, seminars, meetings to broaden individual's scope of understanding higher education issues, training that may or may not be related to a specific job requirement (a University 101 instructor attending a FYE conference for purposes of lesson plan development), participation in University sponsored or sanctioned events.
