PARENTS
Dear Parent,
I’m pleased that
you are visiting the Parent section of the Study Abroad Office
website and are seeking to learn more about the many
opportunities your daughter or son has to study, intern, work,
teach, volunteer, live and travel overseas through USC. In the
following sections, you will find information regarding the
academic, career, and personal
benefits associated with studying
overseas. You will also find resources related to health and
safety overseas, the financial aspects of studying abroad, and
the process of cultural adjustment that all students go through
when living in a foreign environment. Lastly, the study abroad
staff has compiled a list of thirteen Tips for Parents to help
you make this experience rewarding for your student – and you.
The
Study Abroad Office staff is here to guide students through
every stage of the study abroad process. We listen to them
describe where they want to study and travel, the type of living
arrangement they would prefer, and their concerns about making
this dream happen both academically and financially. Then we
provide them with information about program options, courses,
scholarships and financial aid to review and share with you –
their parents. I encourage you to let your students meet with
our advisors on their own and follow-through on the different
pieces involved with this process independently. Developing a
sense of independence, responsibility and flexibility are all
outcomes of the study abroad experience—which starts even before
your son or daughter steps on the plane.
I
also encourage you to explore the rest of the Study Abroad
Office website. The FAQ sections are particularly helpful in
answering the questions that students, and their parents, most
commonly have. In addition, you can learn more about the staff
by visiting our Meet the Staff section of the website. Please
feel free to contact any member of the staff should you have
concerns or would like more information.
