FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When should I start
planning my study abroad experience?
Many people begin their search the semester before they
plan to go abroad. But if you take more time to research your
options and think about what you want to do, you will have more
program choices available to you and more time to apply for
study abroad scholarships. Ideally, it is best to start
planning 9-12 months before your departure. However, you may
apply for programs as long as you are able to meet the
posted deadlines.
When is the best time to study abroad
and for how long?
The best time and length for a study
abroad experience is dependent upon your academic program,
interests and goals. A short-term program may be best for you
if you have very specific and sequential academic requirements.
Longer term programs allow for a more in-depth look at your host
country and culture, and increased foreign language
proficiency. Many students choose to study abroad during their
sophomore or junior year or during the summer. You are eligible
for a summer program as early as the summer following your
freshman year. If you are interested in a semester or full
year, you are eligible to study abroad from your sophomore
through your senior year. Studying abroad during senior year is
possible, but your department has to waive the university’s
requirement that your last 30 hours be completed on-campus.
If I study abroad will I lose a
semester’s worth of credit?
If you plan carefully you will not typically lose
credits. You could actually earn major, minor, or general
education credits toward your degree while abroad.
If I study abroad will it delay my
graduation?
If you plan carefully with your academic advisor and
have your study abroad approved as part of your academic
program, it will not delay your graduation.
Do I have to speak
a foreign language to study abroad?
Knowing a foreign language is not a prerequisite
for study abroad. There are many opportunities to study in
English-speaking countries. You can also take courses in
English in many non-English-speaking countries – like business
or journalism courses in Italy or marine science courses in
Denmark.
Is study abroad limited to certain
majors?
Study abroad is not limited to certain majors.
Some of the more structured majors, such as journalism, pre-med,
nursing, pharmacy, and engineering, typically require more
lead-time for planning, but it is possible.
What can I study while I am abroad?
Given the wide range of program options available to
you, the types of subjects you could study are really endless.
You and your academic advisor will decide before you leave what
classes or subjects you will take while abroad.
Is study abroad affordable?
In many cases the cost of studying abroad is comparable
to studying at USC, with the additional cost of transportation.
USC exchange program participants actually pay USC in-state
tuition and fees. Housing and food costs are site-specific,
thus vary based on the location and type of accommodation
chosen. However, many exchange institutions are in areas where
the cost of living is comparable to USC. Program provider and
USC affiliate programs vary in cost, with many options for those
concerned about budgets and costs.
Can I use my financial aid and
scholarships to study abroad?
Students may use federal financial aid and general
university and/or state sponsored scholarships to study abroad
provided that the course work undertaken abroad has been
approved in advance. Departmental and private scholarships
require approval of the provider.
Are there scholarships specifically
for study abroad?
There are program provider, institutional, regional and
national study abroad scholarships for which you may be
eligible. The
Office of
Fellowships and Scholar Programs, along with the study
abroad office can help guide you through the application
process. Visit our
Scholarships
and Financial Aid section for more information.
What is the GPA requirement for study
abroad?
The minimum GPA required for USC programs is 3.0. Many
program providers are willing to accept students with GPA’s
between 2.5 and 3.0.
Is it safe to study abroad?
Study Abroad staff members
maintain close contact with overseas colleagues and program
providers to help ensure the personal safety and security
of each of our study abroad participants. During our
pre-departure orientation, the Study Abroad Staff reviews health
and safety concerns with study abroad participants and answers
any questions they may have. On-site program directors and/or
personnel are also available to assist students at any time. |
