AFRICA (South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland)
Department of International Business

Dates: June 7 -22, 2009

Prerequisites: Must be a business student

Business in Africa
Experience the business climate in Africa on a 15-day trip to South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland. See firsthand how economic development projects affect the lives of people in Southern Africa. Visit an Aids clinic in South Africa and learn how South Africans are fighting the epidemic. Talk with entrepreneurs in the Kingdom of Swaziland who have received small loans from microfinance institutions. Meet Peace Corps workers in the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique. Visit game reserves in South Africa and Swaziland to learn how countries in Southern Africa are managing their magnificent wildlife heritage.

CHINA (Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai)

Marketing in China
This course is designed to further student understanding of the complexities of marketing in today’s diverse environments. In addition to classroom based lectures at USC, students will travel with a USC faculty member to China to explore consumer behavior, advertising, sales, and marketing managements. Students will engage in company visits, cultural activities, and will travel through three of China’s important cities. The program includes airfare, accommodations, local travel, meals per itinerary, and entrance fees per itinerary.

EUROPE (Istanbul, Vienna and Prague)
Moore School of Business
Dates: Maymester 2009
Credits: 3 undergraduate (IBUS 443)

International Business in Europe
This course will be a combination of a 5-day distance learning module (May 11-15) and an 11-day trip to four European cities – Vienna (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Bratislava (Slovakia), and Prague (Czech Republic) May 17-27, 2009. Students will learn about important political, economic, and social processes taking place in Europe and the diverse cultures in the region. They will develop an understanding of the implications of the European environment for international business.

During the trip, participants will experience firsthand the business climate in the region through lectures, meetings with government officials and business executives, and visits to companies and international organizations (e.g., the United Nations, the U.S. Embassy, and the Czech-Invest Company, etc.). The program also includes sightseeing tours and unique cultural events in all cities (e.g., a tour of the Melk monastery, and a visit to the Treasury Museum in Austria).

FRANCE (Paris)
Department of Retailing

Dates: May 12 – 19, 2009
Credits: 3 undergraduate (RETL 491) – may be applied toward RETL elective or general elective requirements.

Paris Maymester Study Tour
This intensive study abroad course sponsored by USC's Department of Retailing focuses on Paris's retail environment. Participants will have the opportunity to study retail operations, merchandising, and promotion in Paris, France. Included in the program are visits to retailers, fashion designers, museums, and cultural events. Visit the new Dolce and Gabanna store, Collette store and hear a lecture from Prudence, designer for Vivienne Westwood. The cost of the trip is $3,300 plus tuition and fees (3 credits). The program fee includes airfare, accommodations, some meals, local transportation, and entrance fees per itinerary.

GERMANY (Munich)
School of Journalism and Mass Communications

Multimedia Maymester in Munich
This program, organized by USC's School of Journalism and Mass Communications, may be of particular interest to students studying video, writing, media arts, photography, or design. The objective of the course is to provide students with the opportunity to experiment and develop multimedia skills in journalism and mass communications that extend beyond the classroom. The international aspect offers students the chance to experience, study and explore the media’s role in other societies. The projects are designed to enhance and foster participants’ multimedia technical skills and insight to global professional experience. Students will meet four times during the Spring semester to prepare for class and depart in mid-May for Munich. See it. Live it. Tell it.

Jamaica
Spring Break Service Learning

Communication, Community, and Culture
Imagine studying what it means to actually be a “community” and then having the opportunity to become fully immersed in the daily life of a small rural Jamaican village. Students will spend their spring semester studying the characteristics of communities, different methods of communication with an emphasis on visual communication, and the unique characteristics of the Jamaican culture.  They will then participate in a service learning project in Petersfield, Jamaica over spring break applying what they have studied to help a community in need.  While in Jamaica, students will also live in homestays with Jamaican families and have the opportunity to learn firsthand about authentic Jamaica culture.

SCOTLAND (Dundee, Edinburgh, Findhorn)

Creating Sustainable Communities: A trip to Findhorn Ecovillage in Scotland
This three hour Experimental Maymester course will examine the cutting edge of Sustainable and Intentional Communities worldwide. The course will give students hands-on experience in all aspects of sustainable communities including; low impact living, sustainable food systems, full-participation governance, consensus decision making techniques, and an introduction into appropriate technologies and alternative energy. The course includes visits to The Human Ecology Institute in Edinburgh, the Craigencalt Ecology Centre, Dundee University, Sun City (an entire city sited well to take advantage of solar thermal energy), and a week in Findhorn Ecovillage where students will participate in the life and work of an actual ecovillage community. The program includes airfare, most meals, accommodations, rail tickets, and entrance fees per itinerary.

TAIWAN (Taipei)
Dates: Maymester 2009

Credits: 3 undergraduate

Taiwan, the location for this summer study abroad program, has been a significant locale for historical commerce, conflict and cooperation. Since 1624 when the Dutch set up trading facilities on the island, Taiwan and its people have had extensive and significant relations with countries throughout the region and the world from Dutch and Southeast Asian traders to Qing Dynasty subordination, Japanese colonialism, and American partnership. Students will attend Ming Chuan University and take classes with other USC students. The program offers courses taught in English in areas such as business, culture and society, and Mandarin language. Included in the program are excursions to sites of cultural and historical importance. Visit Ming Chuan University at
