NOTE TAKERS

Volunteer as a Note taker – help a fellow student and add to your resume

Student Disability Services provides Note taking as a mandated support service.

We rely on students in courses to volunteer as note takers.    All students who receive note taker accommodations must attend class, but they may need note takers for various reasons.    Most need a note taker because they cannot use their hands, write slowly, or cannot keep up with the amount of notes in class.

If you are interested in helping out a fellow student and having a positive volunteer experience to add to your resume, please consider being a note taker!   Our staff will also be glad to write you a volunteer recognition letter at the end of the semester, at your request.

Please click the “List of Open Classes” Link in the box at the top of this page to see if there are any openings in classes you are currently signed up for and interested in taking notes for.    You must select the course through our on-line system which will then be approved by our staff in the next two business days.  The staff will also give you the name of the student/s you are taking notes for in the course. The course will not disappear from the list until it is approved and will be based upon first come first serve.  Please do not sign up for a single course more than once.

What are the responsibilities of a volunteer note taker?

  • After you sign up, and before you begin taking notes, you must visit 112A LeConte to sign a confidentiality waiver and FERPA statement in our office.   Signing these forms is required due to confidentiality needs of students with disabilities.

  • Attend class regularly, just as you normally would!

  • Take notes in class, just as you normally would!    Generally people who sign up to take notes in a class already feel that they take good notes.   However, we recommend you look through the 15 minute note taker training (see box at top of this page).     Note takers who go through the training usually tell us they learned some helpful tips and take better notes for themselves.

  • Come to LeConte 112A within 24 hours of each class and scan your notes in our computer lab.    You will then email the notes to the recipient while in the lab, and we’ll save a back-up copy of the notes on our computer, in case an email does not go through.

  • Other things to note:

    • If there is an occasion where you cannot attend class, contact the Disability Services staff as soon as possible.

    • If you do miss class, please get a copy of the missed notes from someone in class when you return (just as you normally would) and provide them for the student with a disability.

    • These announcements are important to write in the notes.
