New Initiative Fund Grants

Starting in October, Student Government will be accepting applications for new program funding through the New Initiative Fund. The questions and answers below explain the fund and the process.  An application is included below.

What is the New Initiative Fund?
Student Government has allocated $2,000 of its 2012-2013 budget for a New Initiative Fund, the purpose of which is to make money available to start new programs at the university.  This is a new way for members of the university to bring their ideas to life to benefit the school community.

Who may submit proposals?
Students, faculty, and staff from the Columbia campus may submit an application to receive funds for a specific program or event.  Submissions with student organization backing are strongly encouraged.  Members of Student Government are eligible to submit proposals as well.

What kinds of programs are eligible to receive a grant?
Any program that has a positive impact on the university may receive funding.  This could take the form of a one-time event or an ongoing program, but it must be deemed new to the university.  Proposals must show proof of serious thought and planning to be considered.  Preference will be given to programs that are likely to make the largest contribution to the university community and are unlikely to be successful without Student Government funding.  However, collaborative funding is encouraged.

How will funding decisions be made?
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis after October 3, 2012 and will be granted or declined by a majority vote of a panel consisting of selected Student Government members.  Applicants will have the opportunity to defend their proposal before a panel.  Applications will be granted or declined by a majority vote of a panel consisting of the Student Government executive officers, the chair of the student senate finance committee, a representative from the executive cabinet, and one student comptroller.  The panel reserves the right to fund proposals completely, partially, or not at all.  All decisions of the panel are final.

Where do I turn in my application?
Completed New Initiative Fund applications should be turned in to the receptionist in the Campus Life Center in Russell House between 9am and 5pm. Or, if you have any questions please contact Student Body Treasurer Coy Gibson at sasgtrea@email.sc.edu or call 803-777-3857.
