New Initiative Fund Grants

What is the New Initiative Fund?
Student government has allocated $2,600 of its 2011-2012 budget for a New Initiative Fund, the purpose of which is to make money available to start new programs at the university.  This is a new way for members of the university to bring their ideas to life to benefit the school community.

After the 1st round of applicants, there is $1,600 still left over from the New Initiative Fund.

Who may submit proposals?
Students, faculty, and staff from the Columbia campus may submit an application to receive funds for a specific program or event.  Submissions with student organization backing are strongly encouraged.  Members of student government are eligible to submit proposals as well.

What kinds of programs are eligible to receive a grant?
Any program that has a positive impact on the university may receive funding.  This could take the form of a one-time event or an ongoing program, but it must be deemed new to the university.  Proposals must show proof of serious thought and planning to be considered.  Preference will be given to programs that are likely to make the largest contribution to the university community and are unlikely to be successful without student government funding.  However, collaborative funding is encouraged.

How will funding decisions be made?
To be considered for the second round of funding, applications are due February 13, 2012 by 5:00pm.  Applications may be submitted in person to the Campus Life Center or emailed to Student Body Treasurer, Emily Supil, at supil@email.sc.edu.

Applications will be granted or declined by a majority vote of a panel consisting of the student government executive officers, the chair of the student senate finance committee, a representative from the executive cabinet, and one student comptroller.  Applicants will have the opportunity to defend their proposal before the panel. The panel reserves the right to fund proposals completely, partially, or not at all. All decisions of the panel are final.
