Student Government Executive Cabinet Application
Cabinet meetings will be every Tuesday at 6:00. Please make sure you can commit to this time before you apply. Based on your appointment you will be required to attend other meetings such as senate, senate committee meetings, one-on-ones, social activities, staff meetings, ect… There will also be a required cabinet retreat on Sunday, March 27
Areas of Interest
Advancement and Community Relations
This team will be responsible for heading up efforts for Student Government to promote itself
and the University in Columbia, South Carolina, and Nationally. This includes visiting high
schools, various communities and educational institutions. This team will work with the
Development office to raise funds for the University and also with the University President’s
Capital Campaign. The leadership will plan events in which other universities visit Carolina to
discuss issues and exchange ideas. This group will also work with the Columbia community
to improve relations through the integration of community service within Student
Government. This group will also act as a liaison to the My Carolina Alumni Association.
Athletics
This group will be responsible for serving as the official Student Government representative
to the Athletics Department. The group will work on issues such as student ticket
distribution, the use of the Carolina Card at games, game day security, and transportation to
the games, and school spirit. These leaders will work in conjunction with the Senate Athletics
Committee to organize a community of students to improve student attendance and publicity
for athletic events. Members of Athletics will also work on various programing events that will
enhance this component of student life. They will also be responsible for working with Ticket
Return to further advance the system.
Academics
Academics will work on a variety of projects that deal with in-class and out-of-class
educational experiences for students. They will assist the President in continuing to work on
assessing and promoting the textbook rental program, the Text Book Turnstile at Thomas
Cooper Library, and other initiatives to lower textbook prices. This team will work closely with
the Faculty Senate to build communication and a working relationship. This area will require
some partnership with other parts of Student Government to research what can be done to
reduce the overall financial burden academics or higher education can have on students, and
addressing the issue at state and federal levels. Members of Academics will also focus on the
student advisement process by finding ways to make this experience more efficient and
effective. The team will have put a great emphasis on developing study abroad,
undergraduate research, financial aid, internships, jobs and other career development
opportunities better for students.
Business and Government Relations
This group will be in charge of developing and facilitating a working relationship with local,
state, and national politicians. They will coordinate all student-lobbying initiatives on the
state and national levels. This group will oversee the Congressional Advisory Board and will
work with the President to appoint students to that board. Some initiatives this group will
oversee are eat-in speak-out, political debates, showcase, dialogues, events at the South
Carolina Statehouse and any new initiatives that take form. As with government affairs, group
will do the same with businesses in the community. They will work to create initiatives and
partnerships that will work to promote students, but also businesses. This team will help to
raise awareness and research South Carolina’s economy.
Greek Affairs
This group will be in charge of developing a coalition between Greek Life and Student
Government. They will work on initiatives such as transportation for Greek Village, sustaining
the culture, and promotion. This person will be ask to serve as the representative for Student
Government for any council meetings. This group will also work to help create a strong
communication by working with the President of the Student Body by participating in Greek
events and attending meetings.
Student Organization Development and Engagement
This group will assist the Student Body Treasurer in advocating for the financial help of
student organizations and the education of their budget. This team will also schedule times in
which Student Government leaders will meet with organizations on campus and help to
develop relationship to improve communication. This group will be in charge of the
development and implementation of the Thomas Sumter Academy. The academy will focus on
organizational development in areas of recruitment, leadership, internal affairs, budgeting,
fundraising, etc…. This group will begin to lay the foundation for the communication
platform that will be developed for organization to utilize for the reasons for a publicity
resource and student engagement. This group will also directly work with the Residence Hall
Association.
Diversity and Inclusion
The role of this group will be to promote the importance of diversity and inclusion at the
University. This group will work with all minority and multicultural groups to create a more
inclusive campus and culture. Partnerships will be strengthened with departments such as
OMSA, University 101, Housing, and Student Development etc… The Diversity and Inclusion
group will assist in educating all new and current students about what it means to be diverse
and inclusive. The initiatives this group will promote and develop will foster an inclusive
environment that is devoted to promoting the beliefs and values of the Carolinian Creed. The
foundation of their initiatives will be the opportunity to discover, learn and appreciate the
diversity that makes up our campus.
Safety and Transportation
Safety and Transportation will work in conjunction with each other. This group will continue
to work with on the safe ride program to promote and develop awareness throughout the
Carolina Community. This group will also work with the current shuttle system to make it
more efficient and effective for students. Through these transportation initiatives, the group
will work with keeping our students safer. Members of safety will assess at lights along walk
areas, a more effectively marketed late-night transportation services, and alert systems. This
group will work with the USC Police Department to make sure that we are communicating,
executing, and enriching current and new initiatives. Members of safety will also work at
educating students on the resources and programs available to them on campus.
Student Services
This group will be in charge of improving the quality of student life through certain student services provided to students around campus.This will focus on enhancing the Carolina Card by working with dining services to improve the current system. They will focus on other things such as time frames and quality improvement. This group will continue to push the Carolina Card off campus with options.They will serve on committees dealing with student services and representing the student body and working with groups in the Russell House to help further different initiatives. Student Services will work with Sustainable Carolina to help further the University’s progression of conservation and sustainable development. This group will work in collaboration with Academics and Transportation to help enhance those services. This group will focus on promoting the wellbeing of all students by working in collaboration with Healthy Carolina. Members of Student Services will work with off campus housing to help with closing the disconnect these students have.
Freshman Council Advisors (2)
These persons will be responsible for overseeing the Freshmen Council. Duties of the FC
Advisors are assigned according to the Student Government Constitution and Freshmen
Council Charter. One advisor will be a senior with an anticipated graduation date of May
2012. The second advisor will have been a member of the 2010-2011 Freshman Council. FC
advisors will be responsible for advertising, recruiting, developing, and advising the
Freshman Council.
The Elections Commissioner and Commission
The elections commissioner will recruit and appoint members of the commission during the
spring semester. This commission will serve to oversee the process and integrity of Student
Body Elections. The elections commission will be in charge of leading, evaluating, researching
past elections trends to help increase voter turn-out for the coming election year. The
commission will work with all of Student Government to help promote elections and student
involvement within Student Government. The elections commission will also plan the budget
for the election as well inauguration.
Attorney General
The AG will assist the President with Student Government legislative and judicial matters. The
AG will assist the President in organizing the new Constitutional Council. The Attorney
General will also serve as the official liaison to the Carolina Student Judicial Council (CSJC).
