Stay Informed: Facts About H1N1 Flu Vaccines and Prevention

The health and safety of our campus community is the University of South Carolina's top priority, and we are well prepared to take action as new information about the H1N1 virus becomes available. University officials are working closely with local, state and federal public health officials in preparing our campus and urge everyone to follow simple tips to stop the spread of this virus.

H1N1 Flu Vaccine Information

H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Vaccine Now Available 

University of South Carolina Student Health Services has a limited supply of the seasonal flu vaccine and both injectable and intranasal H1N1 vaccines. They will be offered to all faculty, staff and students at the Thomson Student Health Center Monday, Feb. 8 through Friday, Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment is necessary.


A very limited quantity of seasonal flu vaccine is available at the following costs:
Student $15
Faculty/staff $25

There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine.


You can receive both the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal injectable flu vaccine at the same time.

You MUST bring your University ID card to receive the a vaccine.

Please note that Student Health Services' current supply of vaccine is limited. This clinic is one of many Student Health Services will offer as additional vaccine is made available to us.

Avoid catching and transmitting seasonal and H1N1 flu

  • Wash your hands often with warm, soapy water
  • Use hand wipes and sanitizers
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Stay home if you are sick; stay away from people who are sick
  • Get 7-9 hours of sleep each night
  • Drink lots of water, and eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Get an annual flu vaccine
  • Be physically active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week

Symptoms

  • A temperature higher than 100F
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Sudden onset of dizziness

If you have the symptoms described above

  • Remain in your residence
  • Students: call Thomson Student Health Center at 803.777.3658 or your family physician
  • Faculty and staff: call your primary care physician or Primary Care Partners at 803.777.5373
  • Self-isolate (except to get medical care) for at least 24 hours after fever subsides without use of fever-reducing medicine
When Should I See Emergency Medical Care
  • You have difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • You have a purple or blue discoloration of your lips
  • You have vomiting and unable to keep liquids down
  • You have signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing or absence of urination
  • You have a seizures or uncontrolled convulsions
  • You are less responsive than normal or have difficulty thinking

If you fall within one of the following categories and have been exposed to anyone with the flu or have flu-like symptoms, promptly call your physician:

  • Pregnant women
  • Persons younger than 19 who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy
  • People who are morbidly obese
  • People with chronic pulmonary (asthma), cardiovascular (except high blood pressure), renal, hepatic, hematological (sickle cell disease), neurologic, neuromuscular or metabolic disorders (including diabetes), immunosuppression, including that caused by medications or by HIV
  • Children younger than 5
  • Adults older than 65
  • Residents of chronic care facilities or nursing homes
