The Counseling and Human Development Center (CHDC) is
a component of the Student Health Services at the
University of South Carolina located on the Columbia
Campus. CHDC has a multi-disciplinary staff representing
psychiatry, social work, counseling, and psychology. In
addition, the training program includes social work
field placement and advanced counseling practicum
students. CHDC provides a comprehensive array of
remedial, developmental and preventive services to
students, faculty, staff, and organizational systems
within the University. The mission of CHDC is to
facilitate academic and moral development of students by
enhancing educational, emotional, personal, and social
development.
In order to accomplish this mission, CHDC provides both
direct and indirect services to students, faculty, and
staff. Direct services include individual, couple,
family, group psychotherapy, support and skill
development groups, and comprehensive psychometric
services. Support/therapy groups meet weekly throughout
the semester with the goal of increasing personal
development. Regularly offered groups include the
following areas: General Therapy, Substance Use, Class
Absence Reflection, Eating Disorders, Smoking Cessation,
Anger Management, and Experiential (Psychomotor) Group
Therapy. Some groups focus on personal development
issues such as Soul Food Café, Brothas & Sistas
Empowerment, International Students, Meditation,
Self-Hypnosis, and GLBT Issues. Interns are encouraged
to develop their own interests by offering groups on
relevant topics.
CHDC staff also offers psychoeducational programs upon
request to residence halls, classes, and university
organizations. Indirect services of the center also
include consultation to academic and administrative
departments within the university, particularly in the
Division of Student Affairs (Residential Life, Student
Development, Student Health Center, International
Student Services and Disabled Student Services). In
addition, the staff has provided ongoing consultative
services to off-campus organizations such as local
alcohol and drug commissions, department of youth
services, mental health agencies, city police
commission, and industrial organizations.
