Group Counseling

The Counseling & Human Development Center provides students with the opportunity to work with others sharing common concerns in a group counseling format.

Group counseling is a powerful venue for growth and change. Not only do students receive tremendous understanding, support, and encouragement from others facing similar issues, but they also gain different perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints on those issues. Most students, though somewhat apprehensive at first, report that the group experience was helpful far beyond their expectations. We at CHDC are convinced that group therapy is one of the most effective tools for addressing issues common among college students.

Group counseling is recommended when your intake counselor believes that it is the best way to address your concerns. We do not put people into group counseling because we don't have space in individual counseling, or because we want to save time. We recommend group when it is the most effective method to help you. Your intake counselor can discuss with you why group is what we recommend for you.

Group counseling is often more efficient than individual counseling for two reasons.

  • First, you can benefit from the group even during sessions when you say little by listening carefully to others. You will find that you have much in common with other group members, and as they work on a concern, you can learn more about yourself.
  • Secondly, group members will often bring up issues that strike a chord with you, but which you might not have been aware of or brought up yourself.

Groups have an average of 8 – 12 students and two counselors. They generally meet weekly, for 90 minutes.

While our selection of groups varies throughout the year, CHDC typically offers general therapy groups for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as some theme-focused groups for eating management, bereavement, survivors of abuse, LGBT students, and others.  There is NO CHARGE for Group Therapy.
