Managing Stress

Stress – Defined as a physiological and psychological state of arousal caused by the perceived presence of a challenging or threatening event.

STRESSORS – factors or events, real or imagined that elicit a state of stress.

Five sources of STRESS:

SOCIAL –noise, crowding, etc.

PSYCHOLOGICAL –anxiety, worry, sadness, etc.

PSYCHOSOCIAL –loss of job, death of a family member, or friend, etc.

PHYSIOLOGICAL – injury, illness, etc.

COGNITION -negative thinking (e.g., Everything stinks! I’m too fat!)



KEYS TO SELF-CARE:
Holistic Model
MIND- BODY- SPIRIT
QUALITY RELATIONSHIPS – nurturing, accepting, etc.
SOCIAL SUPPORT - bonds with supportive friends, family, etc.
EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION – good communication about your feelings
SOLITUDE- quiet time for self-reflection (e.g. meditation, prayer, etc.)
