Community Support Meetings

When the Carolina campus community experiences some form of traumatic event such as the death of a student, staff, or faculty member, a traumatic accident involving one of our community members, or any other form of critical event, it can be beneficial to gather together as a community in a familiar place to share the loss and find support in one another.

For this reason, when these instances of loss or tragedy occur, staff from CHDC can be called upon by community leaders to assist in organizing and leading a Community Support Meeting.

A Community Support Meeting is a facilitated conversation that takes place in a location selected by the affected community, and which is structured in order to provide a safe place to talk about what has occurred and how community members are reacting to the event.

Community Support Meetings are coordinated by Dr. Tobin Lovell of the Counseling & Human Development Center in collaboration with the leaders of affected communities on campus.

For more information, or to request a Community Support Meeting, please contact Dr. Lovell by calling (803) 777-5223 or via e-mail  at lovellt@sc.edu.
