Parents FAQs

What is Student Health Services policy in prescribing/refilling medication for ADD?
To provide high quality, evidence-supported, consistent stimulant medication for the treatment of ADD/ADHD, Student Health Services has established Practice Guidelines for high risk/problem prone/high volume disorders. Click here for the ADD Policy.

I’m used to knowing everything that’s going on. How are parents notified about illnesses? What about confidentiality?
By Federal HIPAA law, medical information and records for students over 18 years of age are strictly confidential. If your student gives us written authorization, then we can talk to you about your student’s particular health care issue. However, we do not accept a blanket medical release authorization. Written authorization needs to be granted each time the student wants us to discuss his/her care with you. In the even of a life-threatening emergency, Student Health Services will attempt to notify you, if possible.

Does SHS write medical excuses for missed classes or tests?
Students are responsible for notifying professors or instructors of absences caused by illness or injury. Student Health Services providers do not write medical excuses for missed classes or tests. Of course, SHS providers can supply the necessary documentation for extended illnesses or injuries, including those necessitating medical withdrawal from classes.

What kind of mental health and counseling services are available for USC students?
Mental health and counseling services are among the most important student health services we provide. Competent, licensed clinicians provide a variety of outpatient mental health services through our Counseling & Human Development Center. There are no charges for the first 12 counseling sessions. However, when sessions exceed this amount or when referrals are made to clinics outside the Counseling center, expenses for those visits are the responsibility of the student.

What should parents know about required and recommended immunizations?
USC follows the CDC and American College Health Association’s recommendations regarding immunizations for college students. All incoming students are required to have two Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations and the Menectra meningitis vaccine. Currently MMR vaccine is $55.00 and Menectra is $100.00. Prices are subject to change.

Students should (but are not required to) have a recent Diphtheria Tetanus booster, three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine, and immunity to Varicella (chicken pox), either by previous disease or vaccination. Female students under the age of 26 are recommended to receive the cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil. These immunizations are readily available at SHS for a fee.

Immunziation forms must be completed prior to your student’s class registration. Your student’s immunization record does not automatically transfer from his/her high school or other colleges. You must request a copy of his/her immunization record.

Can SHS administer allergy shots?
If the student provides his/her antigen and injection schedule from their allergist, Student Health Services can administer your student’s allergy injections.

Does SHS offer yearly flu vaccines?
Yes, we highly encourage all students to obtain a flu vaccine. The vaccine is usually in early October and costs between $10-15.

Does SHS provide international travel consultations regarding immunizations?

Travel consultations are available at the Thomson Student Health Center by appointment. Students are subject to a small fee-for-service. Since international travel often necessitates additional immunizations, we strongly recommend that appointments be schedule several weeks prior to the date of departure.

How does my student get prescription medications? Can SHS physicians write prescriptions?
Yes, our physicians are fully licensed and board certified. They can write prescriptions and prescriptions written by outsider providers can be filled in our pharmacy. The Thomson Student Health Center has an on-site pharmacy  with a large inventory of prescription, non-prescription, and over-the-counter products.

Does SHS help us file insurance claims? What about other billing issues?
Payment of charges is expected at the time of service. We accept cash, checks, Carolina Card, Visa, Discovery and MasterCard. We also participate in the USC sponsored student health insurance. We do not file on insurance outside the school-sponsored plan. We will provide your student with copies of all relevant paperwork you will need to file for payment and/or reimbursement with your insurance carrier.

If the charges are unpaid at the time of the visit, we will transfer the balance to the Bursar’s office for billing on the student’s account. Please note: If a student’s account become past due, USC may withhold transcripts, grades, registration or other University services until all past due amounts are paid.

Can my student get health insurance at USC?
Student health fees cover only outpatient primary, short-term counseling and psychiatry services, and certain wellness program activities. The student health fee does not cover expenses such as specialist care, emergency services or hospitalization. The costs of these services can run quickly into the tens of thousands of dollars. Such unexpected expenses can derail, or even end, a promising academic career. We strongly encourage you to obtain health insurance for your student

What sort of medical supplies should my student bring to USC?
Your student should bring any current prescription medications that he/she is taking. We also recommend: BandAids, elastic bandages for wrapping sprains, antibacterial ointment, thermometer, medicine for upset stomach, acetaminophen or ibuprofin for pain and fever, ice pack/hot pack, and cold and sinus medicine.

Make sure your students brings his/her health insurance and pharmacy cards. Make certain your student knows what his/her allergies are, especially if there are allergies to any types of medications. If your student has health issues we should know about , please have him/her bring their records to the Thomson Student Health Center.
