February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention & Prevention are partnering with Campus Wellness to provide condoms and candy for Valentine’s Day.  This event will promote healthy relationships and safe sexual encounters.  The event will generate an open dialoguee about healthy relationships. We will be on Greene Street February 14, to celebrate healthy relationships.

Hero Awards
This event recognizes Carolinians who have helped others in ordinary ways that made an extraordinary impact. While small deeds may go unrecognized, it is important to showcase the truly momentous impact that individual deeds have on our campus community. These accountable bystanders have gone above and beyond to help friends, classmates, coworkers, and complete strangers.  They pay attention to what is going on around them and possess empathy and compassion, which enables them to “Stand Up” and make a difference in the lives of others. Nominees will be recognized at the third annual Hero Awards Banquet on March 21, 2012 at 9 a.m. in the Capstone room. Click here for more information!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There are several events that we have planned which include but are not limited to:

  1. Raise public/campus awareness about interpersonal violence (focusing on Sexual assault but not limited to) as a major social issue.  One of the main ways that this is accomplished is by the Clothesline Project. The Clothesline Project is a national campaign that started in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women and sexual assault. It is a vehicle for women and men affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a T-shirt. There are different colored shirts for different types of violence:

Pink Shirt = for survivors of sexual assault

Yellow Shirt = for survivors of relationship violence

Blue Shirt = for survivors of childhood abuse

White Shirt = in remembrance of those lost to sexual assault violence or relationship violence

Purple Shirt = for survivors of a hate crime

Red Shirt = for MEN’s expression of intolerance of violence or male survivors

We are asking organizations to host their own T-shirt painting sessions. We will provide all the materials and T-shirts, and you pick up them up at our office. We just need you to supply the time, the compassion, and the interest. We will also have scheduled t-shirt painting session hosted by University Housing during the first week of April.  The Clothesline Project submission deadline is April 6th and will be on Display on Greene Street April 16th. Click here to register!

  1. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes ® provides a great opportunity for men to get involved in the fight against sexual violence and in educating the community. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes ® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes to rally the community to fight against sexual violence. This is a community event that is planned by the Sexual Assault Community Taskforce and spearheaded by Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands.  STSM’s goal is to help men understand and appreciate women’s experiences, and realize that this is not only a women’s issue. This is also an opportunity for the community to become aware of services provided for those survivors of sexual assault. Over 400 supporters participated last year! Don't miss out on this fun event! You may pre-register online for the event for $15 (which includes a t-shirt and goody bag) until March 25, 2012. After March 25, 2012 registration will increase to $20. An after party will be held after the event, location TBD.

  1. Nation Demin Day is observed April 25, 2012.  Demin Day was started in Italy in 1992, an 18 year old girl was forcefully raped by her 45 year old driving instructor. The assailant was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to jail. He appealed the sentence, and the case made its way to the Italian Supreme Court. The Supreme Court released the perpetrator and dismissed all charges. The reasoning behind this was “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” The women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in protest, and the California Senate and Assembly did the same. Thus, Denim Day was born.

Stand Up Carolina
University of South Carolina Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention and Prevention will continue presenting the Bystander Accountability Program entitled STAND UP CAROLINA.  Stand Up Carolina empowers students to intervene and prevent sexual and physical violence on campus, discourage negative behavior by curtailing discriminatory, destructive and illegal behavior, call attention to bystander behavior and encourage people to react and take appropriate action with respect to unacceptable behavior, highlight the prevalence and impact of acquaintance rape and/or interpersonal, dating violence as well as stalking and clearly define the role that campus communities can play in ending violence. This program consists of educational presentations, PSA’s, interactive social media and events that  identify social norms that support sexual violence on campus, strengthen the sense of community, promote prevention and teach intervention skills.  Stand Up Carolina will be including in all of the above programming.
