Frequently Asked Questions about Becoming a Safe Zone Ally

What is a Safe Zone Ally?
A Safe Zone Ally is a member of the USC community committed to fighting homophobia and heterosexism while offering visible support to members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) population. The program is designed to provide members with information, resources and guidance regarding this often marginalized population and opportunities to support students.

Why do we have Safe Zone at the University of South Carolina?
To achieve academically, students must be comfortable and safe. Safe Zone helps provide members of our GLBTQ community with a comfortable, safe environment by welcoming and supporting people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

What does it mean if I see a Safe Zone symbol displayed?
A Safe Zone symbol identifies an individual or office as a place where gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning members of our campus community can find support and information about both campus and community resources.

Who can become a Safe Zone Ally?
Any student, faculty or staff member who is interested and willing can become a Safe Zone Ally. All support is welcome and appreciated!

Do I already need to know about GLBTQ resources to join?
Knowledge about GLBTQ resources is by no means required. Allies must only be open and supportive to the needs of GLBTQ individuals and willing to learn about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Do I have to be gay to become a Safe Zone Ally?
No. Allies are welcomed and needed regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Your support and willingness to learn are all that matter.

What do Safe Zone Allies do?
Safe Zone Allies agree to be aware of the presence of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning individuals. Members believe that campuses and communities are enriched by diversity and are willing to assist individuals in accessing support and information resources on campus and in the community. Allies agree to maintain confidentiality and comfortably use inclusive language, avoid stereotyping and do not assume heterosexuality. To ensure confidentiality, Allies sign contracts promising confidentiality. Allies display the Ally logo prominently in their areas to notify individuals they are a source for understanding, safety and information. Allies make a difference.

How do I become a Safe Zone Ally?
Becoming a Safe Zone Ally is easy and rewarding. E-mail the Safe Zone graduate assistant at safezone@mailbox.sc.edu, call 803.777.8248, or stop by our office on the first floor of the Thomson Student Health Center.
