Rohypnol (Roofies, Rope, Rophies)

  • Prescription sedative available in tablet form in foreign countries
  • Not FDA-approved in the United States
  • Colorless, odorless, & tasteless in any beverage (Hoffman-LaRoche, Inc. adds blue dye to pills, but it's still not always detectable, especially in darker beverages)
  • 10-20 times stronger than Valium
  • Sedative effects occur within 15-20 minutes & last about 6 hours
  • Amnesia can begin within a few hours and last 1-2 days
  • Effects can include decreased blood pressure, drowsiness, visual problems, dizziness, confusion, partial amnesia, & urinary retention lasting 12 or more hours
  • Causes addiction, dependence, & serious withdrawal effects
  • Detectable in urine only within 24 hours of ingestion
  • Can be lethal when combined with alcohol
  • Can be obtained for as little as $5 a pill
