In preparation for the One Carolina technology implementation and to improve security for students, faculty and staff, Campus Recreation, part of the Department of Student Life, will begin utilizing individual VIP numbers as part of the biometric access control system at the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center.
The new system will integrate with the CarolinaCard system and is expected to be fully functional by March 15, 2013. This has changed from the original plan to have the system fully functional by the end of the spring semester.
All users of the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center will need to re-enroll their hand measurements into the system using their VIP ID number. The eight-digit VIP ID is a unique and permanent number that identifies each member of the university community and is automatically generated for active students, faculty and staff members.
Hand scanning on the new system is available during regular operating hours (http://campusrec.sc.edu) in the rotunda of the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. Users should present their CarolinaCard to re-enroll/scan their hand. Once a user has re-enrolled his/her hand with the VIP ID number, he/she can use it at the turnstiles to access the facility.
Users who do not know their eight-digit VIP ID should log into VIP using their USC identification number (Social Security Number) and PIN (the four-digit number), and from the personal tab, establish a password to accompany the VIP ID.
This conversion is free for students, faculty and staff. Users, however, must be current students enrolled in good standing and paying fees to the University of South Carolina Columbia campus or faculty or staff with paid membership fees to the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. Spouse members will need to visit the reception desk for further instructions and should bring their CarolinaCard with them. Access to the Blatt PE Center will continue to utilize ID cards.
