Faculty Guide - Fall 2007

What effect would SI have on my class?
SI leaders integrate how to learn with what to learn. Through this approach, students attending SI sessions learn effective study skills that, in turn, will help them earn better grades.  To learn more about the SI model and national longitudinal research which has been collected on the effectiveness of SI, please visit http://www.umkc.edu/cad/SI/Index.htm.

Who are the SI leaders?
SI leaders are undergraduate students who have previously taken the course and mastered the content material. These students have a minimum of an overall 3.0 GPA and an A in the SI course at USC. SI leaders complete a two-day training workshop, in which they learn about the SI model and practice collaborative learning techniques. SI leaders also receive additional training and feedback from SI supervisors throughout the semester.

If you have students that you would like to recommend as SI leaders, please have them submit the online SI Leader Employment Application.

How are courses selected for SI?
SI targets high attrition courses, rather than high risk students.  Courses were selected based on the percentage of students who withdrew from the course or earned a grade of D or F during the past academic year.  Those courses selected had D, F, and withdrawal rates ranging from 24% to 47%.

If you would like your course to be considered for SI, please contact Julie Holliday, Assistant Director for Academic Success Initiatives, at 777-0684 or holliday@sc.edu.
