Prepare for Your Arrival

  • Contact Your Roommate

You can access your room number and roommate information online at in mid-July. Be sure to contact your roommate before Move-In Day to introduce yourself and start planning. Their university email address will be listed with your assignment.

  • Pay Your Fees

Your semester room fee is included on the same bill as your academic fees. Your bill will be posted online on your Self Service Carolina account ( Bills are posted after you have signed up for classes, usually mid-July. Payment is due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Housing fees must be paid before the end of the first day of classes.

  • Secure Personal Property and Liability Insurance

Personal Property and Liability Insurance is required for all students. Log into and access your Housing Assignment homepage for submission details. Check with your parents about adding your valuables to their homeowner’s policy or contact an insurance carrier about getting a separate renter’s insurance policy. The university’s insurance only covers those items belonging to the University of South Carolina.

Review the packing list of what to bring and what not to bring. Remember you’ll be sharing space with your roommate, so talk to them in advance to decide who will bring the items you can share. Don’t forget a hand truck or dolly to help with those big items!

  • Setup Your Computer

Review the University Technology Services (UTS) website at for computer recommendations and requirements. You will need a 25-foot Ethernet cable to connect to the data jack in your room. Also, don’t forget to update your operating system with all critical patches. You can install free antivirus software when you arrive to campus. On Move-In Day, you’ll need to know your network username and password to complete your setup. Simply log on to to find this information.

  • Finalize Your Parking

If you’re planning to bring a car to campus, you’ll need to purchase a permit from Parking Services. Unless otherwise specified, the permit does not guarantee a parking space. Learn more about parking on campus at or call the Parking Services Office at 803-777- 5160.

  • Ship Your Belongings

Are you coming from far way? You can ship your belongings to campus and they’ll be waiting for you. Just make sure they do not arrive earlier than August 5, 2013. You can pick up packages Move-In Weekend at the Student Mail Center located in the basement of the Russell House. Packages cannot be delivered to individual residence halls.
