Please note that Placement Testing is administered by the Math and Foreign Language departments.
Placement tests determine math and foreign language placement and, if necessary, appropriate course-level placement for new and transfer students. To take your math placement test or to schedule your foreign language placement test click the links below and follow the directions.
What are Placement Tests?
Math and Foreign Language placement tests determine proficiency level and therefore placement or exemption for each subject area. These placement tests should be taken prior to New Student Orientation. Students who are unsure of whether or not they have met the general education requirement should consult with their adviser at New Student Orientation. All students must take the Math Placement Test prior to registering for any Math coursework below the 500-level. The University of South Carolina requires that all students demonstrate proficiency in one foreign language.
The Math Placement Test
The Math Placement Test is available online and can be accessed at any time at http://assess.math.sc.edu using your USC Network Username and password. Locate your Network Username in Self Service Carolina. The test is 90 minutes and must be taken in one sitting. Take the test at least two weeks prior to orientation.
The Foreign Language Placement Test
Foreign language exams in French, German, Italian, Latin, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish will be administered on campus by appointment only. For summer 2014, the tests will be offered on the day prior to each New Student Orientation session. Sign up directly through the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at http://www.cas.sc.edu/dllc.
Students who require special accommodations such as additional time or adaptive technology must first be registered with the Office of Student Disability Services. Contact the Office of Student Disability Services at 803-777-6142 or via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
