What is Cocky Connections?
Cocky Connections is a First Year Mentoring Program that pairs seasoned University of South Carolina Students with incoming First Year Students. The mentorship ranges from pre-move in questions, campus tours, involvement, and ways to ensure success throughout their four years at USC. Cocky Connections is meant to connect First Year Students to a current USC student with similar interests, ease the Mentee’s transition into University life, and inspire success in the First Year Student.
Who does Cocky Connections benefit?
Cocky Connections benefits both mentors and mentees. Mentors have the ability to connect with new Gamecocks and help encourage success, allowing them to build on their leadership skills. Mentees are given the opportunity to have a direct contact on campus prior to arriving and to have all of their questions immediately answered. They also have an upperclassman friend before arriving on campus; which many first year students do not have. Cocky Connections will make a large school feel small for our incoming first year students.
When does Cocky Connections occur?
Mentors will make the initial contact with their Mentees a week prior to the Mentees specific move in date. Communication will continue throughout the first semester, as Mentors and Mentees will be required to meet in person at least once a month and will communicate at their own discretion the rest of the time. Cocky Connections will host two events during the semester; one at the beginning to allow everyone to meet and socialize, and another at the end to celebrate a wonderful Cocky Connections session and a successful first semester. While communication will no longer be required after first semester, it is strongly encouraged.

History of Cocky Connections, A First Year Mentoring Program:
Cocky Connections: A First Year Mentoring Program was created by Alyssa Friend and Quinn Alsheimer, two students on the 2016-2017 Freshman Council. With the help of their Senate mentor, Joseph Bass, the Student Services Committee, and the entirety of Freshman Council, they were able to pass the charter for the program through Senate on February 6, 2017, making Cocky Connections an official program of Student Government at the University of South Carolina.
