Mark Kilgus, MD, PhD
Mark D. Kilgus, M.D., Ph.D. is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both General and Child Psychiatry. Dr. Kilgus has been leading programs in psychiatry since 1995 after completing residency and fellowship training at the University of South Carolina and William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute. He has served most recently at Carilion Clinic as Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and was a member of the Board of Governors. He is founding chair and a tenured Professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine where he is an original member of the Admissions Committee and the Dean's Leadership Team. Dr. Kilgus established and directed child and adolescent inpatient services and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program at Carilion Clinic where he participated in the education and training of medical students, residents and fellows in psychiatry, psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, and advanced clinical practitioners. Previous professional homes include the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Frontier Health, Mountain States Health Alliance, James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in South Carolina and Michigan. He is an active member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Christian Medical Dental Association, American Psychiatric Association, and the Southern Medical Association that recently honored him as the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Service Award. He is conducting research on the integration of psychiatry with primary care, reactive attachment disorder in children, and adolescent substance abuse with the most recently published journal articles on cocaine craving. With the faculty at Virginia Tech Dr. Kilgus has completed a casebook to supplement Essential Psychopathology and Its Treatment, a textbook widely used in graduate and medical schools.
